Making the most out of romance : Jung Hae-in says there was something very special about ‘Something in the Rain’

In “Something in the Rain,” Jung plays a young man who falls deeply in love with an older woman who is a family friend. The two try to keep their relationship from falling apart in the midst of various trials and disagreements. The drama was loved by the public, who fell head over heels for Jung and his co-star Son Ye-jin.
Jung explained how special this drama was. “In every project, I try to act with all my heart, and with this drama, I was even more immersed in my character because of the influence of the script,” said Jung in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. He added, “Our director really helped in making an environment perfect for the actors to focus and get into character. So that’s how I was able to really fall deep into character.”
Below are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. The drama ended recently. How are you feeling?
A. A drama I hoped would not end ended. I feel like I’m missing a part of me. I think this project is especially hard to put into words. I still have lingering feelings and get emotional.
What was so compelling about your character?
I have a lot in common with my character - not only his mature side, but also his honesty in portraying his feelings. I was surprised when I saw that some of the expressions and words that I use were written in the script.
Is there a particular line that you remember?
My last line, which was, “Where is my umbrella?” My character had a lot to say, but the only thing he mentioned was the umbrella.
He tells Yoon Jin-ah (Son), who looks perplexed, that all he needs is her. That was my favorite line. It really stood out to me.
What was it like shooting the scene in which you and actor Son’s character meet for the first time since your breakup?
I really could not hide my emotions. [Her boyfriend] was touching her face. When I read the script and saw the boyfriend [at the shooting site,] I was fuming with anger. I actually shot the scene in a state where I was having digestive issues and I broke out in a cold sweat. My arms were shaking.
What is your favorite scene?
The scene where Son and I were at the bar was unforgettable. That was when our characters first held hands and confirmed their feelings for each other. She grabbed my hand first. I think there was excitement and butterflies because we found our true feelings for the first time.
Have you ever experienced a love like the one in the drama?
I don’t think so. I learned from this drama that I should love like this. I realized how important it is to respect the other person and really communicate. In order to minimize any possible misunderstanding, you need to know what the other person is thinking and feeling because everyone has different thoughts. You can’t tell just by looking into their eyes.
How will you remember this project?
It is a project I am very grateful for and it was my first lead role. They say your first project as the main protagonist stays with you forever.

정해인 "'예쁜누나' 진아와의 첫 손깍지 정말 떨렸다"
배우 정해인(30)은 JTBC 금토극 '밥 잘 사주는 예쁜 누나'(이하 '예쁜 누나')를 통해 '대세 연하남'으로 우뚝 섰다. 아는 누나 손예진(윤진아)과 사랑에 빠지는 서준희로 분했다. 사랑하는 사람의 상황과 감정을 이해하고 변해가는 남자의 모습을 사실적으로 표현했다. 이번 작품으로 대세가 됐지만, 정해인은 갑작스럽게 나타난 스타가 아니다. 작은 역할부터 시작해 조금씩 성장해왔다. 안판석 감독이 인정한 연기력이다.
-종영 소감은.
"끝나지 않았으면 했던 드라마가 끝났다. 마음이 헛헛하다. 이번 작품은 (종영 소감을) 말로 표현하기 힘든 것 같다. 계속 여운이 남아 울컥울컥 한다."
-서준희란 인물의 어떤 점에 빠져들었나.
"실제 나와 캐릭터 자체가 비슷한 부분이 많았다. 어른스러운 면도 그렇고 자기 감정 표현에 솔직한 부분도 그렇고 심지어 내가 자주 쓰는 말이 대본에 나와 깜짝 놀랐다. 작가님이 날 알고 글을 썼나 할 정도였다. 소름이 끼쳤다."
-기억에 남는 대사는.
"'내 우산 어디 있어?'라고 묻는 마지막 대사가 기억에 남는다. 인상 깊었다. 할 말이 많지만 풀어서 하지 않고 확 뱉어냈던 얘기가 바로 우산이었다. 말문이 막힌 진아에게 '윤진아 하나면 된다'고 한다. 그 대사 자체가 좋았다. 마음에 와 닿았다."
-손예진과 재회 장면 쉽지 않았을 것 같다.
"정말 표정 관리가 안 됐다. (진아의 현재 남자친구가) 볼까지 만지고 있지 않았나. 그때 당시 대사와 상대방의 모습을 보니 울화통이 터지더라. 실제로 밥 먹은 게 체해 식은땀이 나는 상태에서 촬영했다. 팔이 부들부들 떨렸다."
-연기를 하면 캐릭터에 푹 빠지는 편인가.
"작품마다 진심을 다해 연기하려고 하는데 유독 '예쁜 누나'가 다른 작품보다 대사와 대본이 주는 힘이 컸다. 안판석 감독님이 배우가 현장에서 연기에만 몰입할 수 있는 환경을 만들어줬다. 그래서 더 몰입할 수 있었다."
-어떤 장면이 가장 기억에 남나.
"호프집 장면이 기억에 남는다. 테이블 밑에서 처음으로 손을 잡고 준희와 진아의 마음을 확인하는 장면이었다. 누나가 먼저 손을 잡았고 준희가 깍지를 끼지 않았나. 확인하는 신이라 그런지 설렘도 있었고 떨림도 있었다."
-이런 사랑을 해본 경험이 있나.
"아직 없는 것 같다. 이렇게 사랑을 해야 한다는 걸 배웠다. 상대방을 존중하고 남자와 여자가 대화를 정말 많이 해야겠다고 생각했다. 생각하는 게 다르니까 오해의 편차를 줄이려면 상대의 마음을 알아야 하지 않나. 눈빛만 보면 모를 수 있다."
-'예쁜 누나'는 어떤 작품으로 기억될까.
"진짜 감사한 첫 주연작이다. 첫 드라마 주연작은 평생 기억에 남는 작품이라고 하던데 내게도 그럴 것 같다."
-연상을 선호하나. 이상형이 궁금하다.
"사랑이 기반이 된다면 연상이든 연하든 그게 중요한 것 같지는 않다. 기본 베이스가 사랑이라는 게 중요한 것 같다. 이상형은 조용조용하게 할 말 다하는 똑 부러진 참한 분이 좋다. 대화할 때 화려한 사람보다 꾸밈없고 수더분한, 소탈한 사람이 좋다. 그런 사람이 끌리더라.(웃음) 자기감정 표현에도 솔직한 사람이 좋다. 감추면서 괜찮다고 하는 것보다 싫으면 싫다, 좋으면 좋다고 표현해줄 수 있는 용기 있는 사람이 이상형이다."
-행복의 기준은 무엇인가.
"자꾸 낮추면 된다. 보는 시각과 시야를 조금만 낮추면 엄청 행복해진다. 오늘 하루가 행복하지 않으면 내일도 행복할 수 없다고 생각한다. 일상이 주는 사소한 행복을 감사하게 되면 마음이 편안해진다. 그러면 스트레스를 덜 받고 건강에도 좋다."
