Koreans rank second in Asia on Toeic scores

Koreans scored 676 points on average in TOEIC English language tests last year, ranking 17th out of 47 countries around the world and in second place in Asia after the Philippines, the test administrator said Friday.

TOEIC or Test of English for International Communication has been widely used in Korea as a gauge of job seekers’ English proficiency. A number of companies require job applicants to include their TOEIC scores on their documents.

The U.S.-based test developer Educational Testing Service (ETS) analyzed the scores of about 4.99 million people who took tests last year and found that Canadians topped the list of 47 countries with an average score of 845 out of a possible 990 points, according to the Korea TOEIC Committee.

Koreans scored 369 points in the listening section and 307 points in the reading section on average, leading to the total average score of 676 points, down 3 points from last year’s 679. That was the 17th highest score -- one spot lower than Chile.

After Canadians, Germans came in second place with an average score of 800 points, followed by Belgians with 772 points, Lebanese with 769 points and Italians with 754 points. Filipinos came in seventh place with a score of 727 points, the highest among Asian nations.

Korea came in second among Asian nations, followed by Malaysia with 642 points, China with 600 points, Taiwan with 544 points, Hong Kong with 527 points and Japan with 517 points.
