Becoming a K-pop star is tougher than it looks : Success in the music industry depends on more than just talent

Choi Jin-woo, the CEO of Highup Entertainment, discusses the importance of considering the personality of a potential pop star, during the audition process. [SHIN IN-SUB]

People generally belittle pop stars, forgetting the painstaking efforts they make before they ever step foot on stage and simply assume that they are just pretty faces seeking attention. But the K-pop stars of today need to have genuine talent and tenacity to make it in the highly competitive and increasingly global music industry. And for some, there’s some factors that are increasingly even more important.

“When I choose trainees, the first thing I take into consideration, besides talent, is their personality,” said Choi Jin-woo, the CEO of Highup Entertainment, who has been working in the entertainment industry since 2006. Noted for being the road manager of singers and groups such as Park Ji-yoon, Huh Gak and Apink, Choi is meticulous when it comes to selecting potential trainees.

The scrutiny that pop idols face once they are in the public is incredibly intense and even if they make a seemingly small mistake, it can have a negative impact on the group’s image. To prevent this from happening, the backgrounds of young trainees are heavily considered before they enter the entertainment industry and it is now necessary to carefully scan each candidates’ individual social media accounts during the selection process.

To discuss what he values most in potential pop stars, Choi sat down for an interview with JoongAng Sunday, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.

The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

Q. Please introduce the selection process of choosing a trainee.

A
. Well, we do hold an audition at our company, but we also do select individuals attending vocal training academies. We first film the activities of the candidates and then examine whether they have potential or not. Then, we offer interviews. While carefully considering factors such as their attitude at school and their future goals, we also take a look at their social media accounts. [No matter how talented the candidate is,] we refuse to take them if they are a bully. We finalize our decisions after carefully interviewing the candidates.

From top to bottom: Apink, BTS and Exo are some of the most popular K-pop stars abroad. According to Choi Jin-woo, different groups appeal to different markets depending on their look and sound. [JOONGANG ILBO]

If a person wants to be a pop star do they need to have good morals?

Most adults view idols as physically attractive individuals who can only dance well and lack the ability [to sing]. In reality, this isn’t the case. Those who become successful pop stars usually have a strong sense of purpose. Becoming an idol is extremely painstaking and laborious because they have to follow a tight daily curriculum. It is not only important for an idol to sing and dance well but also for him or her to learn foreign languages and receive moral education. Compared to the past, they also need to have done well in school.

What is the future for the K-pop industry?

Currently, the foreign markets are continuously growing and expanding. K-pop promotes Korea to the world. Thanks to K-pop, the number of foreign visitors has rapidly risen. They come here to watch shows, buy goods, eat Korean food and tour the country.

How do you prepare to expand overseas?

We prepare for this in advance these days, when we’re preparing new groups. For example, if China is our target, then we get a Chinese member. If Japan is our target, then we place a Japanese member in the group. The most important factor is language. Profits vary greatly depending on whether a group is able to fluently speak the mother language of that country or not. Along with English, we also make sure that the singers learn Japanese and Chinese. To become an idol, you need to be clever.

Does each country have their favorite type of K-pop stars?

Yes. In China, groups with a strong and powerful image, like Big Bang and Exo, are extremely popular. On the other hand, girl groups that are youthful and feminine, like Twice, Girl’s Generation and Apink, are well-received in Japan. These [preferences probably] exist because of the difference in the characteristics of fans. In China, they expect a lot of big, powerful performances. Compared to China, Japan has a smaller market but has a strong fan base. When it comes to keeping the albums of their favorite pop stars, Japanese fans are extremely passionate. They will buy 100 to 200 copies of the albums from their favorite groups.

How is the profit model for each idol different?

It’s different based on the group. Generally, boy groups make more profit in the number of albums sold thanks to their foreign fans, while girl groups are more advantageous when it comes to sponsorships. In the case of BTS, they are popular in every sector, including on the music charts, in performances and securing commercial work. Also, physically attractive groups do better than others in terms of events. Overall, the main profitable factors are goods, events, concerts, albums and commercials.

Have you received a lot of foreign investment?

I am receiving investment from diverse areas. About three to four years ago, we started receiving a lot of capital from China. Like other industries, we had our doubts about the possibility of technology leaks. In the past, China frequently requested help with the production of music videos, choreography and songs, but this has rapidly decreased. We think that this is a direct and indirect effect of taking our technology away.

Do you think that other countries will soon catch up?

So far, Korea is obviously in first place. K-pop is not something that can be easily achieved in one or two years. While other countries can seemingly imitate K-pop externally, it will take them a long time to internally develop.

What are your future goals?

I want to be recognized in the domestic market first and then go overseas. Most of the pop stars these days carry pride in themselves for being diplomats who represent Korea.
