(“What time are you getting off work today?”)

This is today’s anchor briefing.

A father felt deeply moved by what his eight-year-old daughter wrote. She wrote the following two lines:

“The advantages of night time: There are a lot of people. Daddy comes home.”
- Written by Ji Yeon-woo, Read by Kim Ji-yoon

The child says that she likes the nighttime.

It is probably her favorite time of day because she can see her father who leaves for work early in the morning.

Recently, Director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who won the Palme d'Or, the highest honor at this year’s Cannes Festival, said the following.

* Palme d'Or: 황금종려상

When my daughter said goodbye to me before I left for work,
She said “come again.”
I felt disturbed and slightly offended.
I thought, “Is it because of the time…?”

- Director Hirokazu Kore-eda "To Live and Forget"

Maybe that’s why his movies are family-oriented and have heartwarming scenes.

A 52-hour workweek starts today

The new working hours system is designed to realize our dream that all family members get together for dinner.

This is also known as work life balance, which aims to make people happier by creating a balance between their work and life

* work life balance: 일과 삶의 균형

However, the concerns that are arising in many workplaces aren’t trivial.

* trivial: 사소한, 하찮은

Since the workloads are the same, many worry that they may have to pretend to get off work early and then work late under candlelight. Another major concern is a decrease in salaries, which are already tight, making it harder for people to sustain a living.

Koreans have the longest working hours in the world.

While people are miserable and bombarded with work on the one hand, the others, many of whom are jobless, draw a sigh.

* bombarded with work: 일이 엄청 많다.

According to an online poll, most workers would choose to spend more time with their families if the 52-hour workweek is implemented in their office.

* implemented: 시행하다

Will the 52-hour workweek ever be fully implemented? Will it become something normal and obvious like the five-day workweek?

I hope the 52-hour workweek will take root as a policy that doesn’t slash wages but simply slashes working hours.

“The advantages of night time: There are a lot of people. Daddy’s coming home.”
- Written by Ji Yeon-woo, Read by Kim Ji-yoon

Those of you might remember, but to recap once more, I introduced this young girl while mentioning “Advantages of Nighttime” during an anchor briefing three years ago.

The child was eight years old then, so she must now be 11 years old.

I am curious of her whereabouts.

Does she still have to wait a long time for her father to come home?

That is all for today’s anchor briefing.
