Korea’s hip-hop queen is getting back on the mic : After a 16-year break, Yoon Mi-rae raps about family life and Tiger JK

Yoon, who, in recent years, is more known for being Tiger JK’s wife and the mother of their son Jordan, is ready to reclaim her title as an artist in her own right. Despite the long hiatus, Yoon proved that she’s still the queen of hip-hop with a stronger and more flexible flow to her rap.
Yoon is not only unafraid to show herself as a mother and a wife, but also doesn’t hold back in offering a real, unfiltered glimpse into her personal life.
“You’re like a dog. You told me you would make us a lot of money, but all you do is drink everyday,” raps Yoon in “Like a Dog.” The track is a rap battle with her husband Tiger JK, and Yoon apparently has no qualms with calling him out on the record.
“I wanted to show all of my true self,” said Yoon during an interview with JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. She added that she hoped to lay bare her reality instead of packaging it to look like something else.
Tiger JK isn’t afraid to - literally - face the music. He admits that “‘Like a Dog’ was inspired by [some of our] arguments.”
In fact, the entire album was a family affair.
“‘Rap Queen’ and ‘Like Today’ were tracks that I originally prepared [for myself], but Mi-rae sang them better so she stole them,” said Tiger JK.
He also added that they wrote songs in English on purpose, targeting the Billboard Charts. He praised his wife, saying, “She is too talented to just stay in Korea.”
Yoon, who made her debut in 1997, was one of the first female artists in Korea to show that women can make hip-hop music. Making music as both a rapper and singer, she has released songs in a number of genres.
Yoon’s father was a U.S. military soldier in Korea and her mother was Korean. In her early years as a singer, she used to wear heavy makeup to hide her skin color and young age.
These days, she’s confident in her own skin and says that she hopes people “will not be afraid to show themselves the way they are.”
When asked what hip-hop means to her, Yoon answered, “I feel the happiest and most comfortable when I rap on stage.” She added, “I think I can’t help but to continue [making music] because of the energy I get from rapping.”
Yoon will soon hand over the baton to her husband as he will be releasing his 10th and last album under the name Drunken Tiger. Yoon held a concert last weekend, performing her greatest hits and inviting guest performers such as singers IU and Han Dong-geun and rapper Dok2 to join her on stage. She is expected to perform at the 2018 Joy Olpark Festival in September.

랩퀸 윤미래 16년 만의 힙합 앨범 “워킹맘 객기 보여주겠다”
윤미래(37·사진)가 칼을 단단히 갈고 나왔다. 16년 만에 힙합 정규 앨범 ‘제미나이2(Gemini2)’를 들고 돌아온 것이다. 2002년 발매된 1.5집 ‘제미나이’와 이어지는 앨범인 만큼 래퍼로서의 정체성을 가감 없이 보여준다. 2007년 결혼 이후 타이거JK(44)의 아내이자 조단(10)의 엄마로 더 유명했던 그가 “새로운 시작, 워킹맘의 객기”를 보여주겠다며 “멈춘 심장이 뛰게 하는 랩 퀸”의 귀환을 선포한 것이다. 적잖은 시간이 흘렀음에도 래핑은 다부졌고, 플로우는 유연했다.
그녀는 누군가의 아내이자 한 아이의 엄마라는 사실을 숨기지 않고 드러낸다. “오빤 개 같애 돈도 많이 벌어준다 했지만 맨날 술만 먹고 지랄”(‘개’)이라며 남편과 디스 배틀을 벌이고, 엄마 아빠를 닮아 곱슬머리인 아이에게 “LP판이 바늘에 긁히면 엄마 아빠는 춤춰”(‘쿠키’)라고 노래한다. 최근 음악감상회에서 만난 윤미래는 “있는 그대로 다 솔직하게 보여주고 싶었다”고 밝혔다.
남편 타이거JK 역시 솔직한 외조를 펼쳤다. “부부싸움도 랩으로 하냐는 질문을 많이 받았다”며 “‘개’는 거기서 영감을 받아서 만든 노래”라고 밝혔다. 그는 “‘랩 퀸’과 ‘오늘처럼’은 원래 제가 준비하던 곡인데 미래가 부른 게 더 좋아서 뺏겼다”고 고백했다. 이어 “빌보드를 노리고 영어 곡도 준비했다”며 “팔이 안으로 굽는 건진 몰라도 미래는 한국에만 있기는 너무 아까운 인재”라며 칭찬을 이어갔다.
윤미래는 여자도 힙합을 할 수 있다는 것을 제대로 보여줬다. 래퍼와 보컬을 자유로이 오가며 흑인음악의 장르 간 경계를 허물었다. 주한미군 아버지와 한국인 어머니 사이에서 태어나 검은 피부와 어린 나이를 숨기기 위해 짙은 화장을 했던 그가 이제 “자기 모습 그대로 있는 것에 대해 두려움이 없었으면 좋겠다”고 말하는 무게감은 다르다.
힙합이 갖는 의미를 묻자 “무대에서 랩 할 때 제일 행복하고 편하다”며 “공연할 때 랩을 서로 주고받는 에너지 때문에 계속할 수밖에 없는 것 같다. 꼭 천국 같다”고 답했다.
타이거JK는 다음 달 드렁큰타이거 10집으로 바통을 이어받을 예정이다. 그는 일찌감치 이번 앨범이 드렁큰타이거라는 이름으로서는 마지막 앨범이라고 선언했다. 1999년 ‘너희가 힙합을 아느냐’로 데뷔해 2005년 DJ 샤인의 탈퇴 이후에도 꾸준히 고집해온 비주류적 색깔이 디지털화된 현재 시장에 맞지 않는다는 판단에서다. 타이거JK는 “14~15일 서울 장충체육관에서 12년 만에 열리는 단독 콘서트 ‘YOONMIRAE’에는 힙합·알앤비·발라드·OST 등 다양한 섹션의 무대가 준비돼 있다. 아이유·도끼·한동근 등 게스트 무대도 기대해달라”며 끝까지 홍보를 잊지 않았다.
