“Wonmidong… a distant and beautiful town”

This is today’s anchor briefing.

The Gimpo Supermarket, which sold rice and coal briquettes, began selling other items after the store expanded.

 * coal briquette: 연탄

But unfortunately, these items happened to be the main products sold by the nearby Hyeongje Supermarket.

Trouble arose when Hyeongje Supermarket countered by selling products that they didn’t sell before: rice and coal briquettes.

 * counter: 반격하다

This marked the beginning of a price war between the two supermarkets.

 * price dumping war: 출혈경쟁

This story depicts how shops get desperate when they have to compete for the same customers in a small neighborhood. Moreover, their customers had difficulties making a living and the neighborhood was not well off.

A battle between the powerless in the same alley

 * alley: 골목

As a matter of fact, this is nothing different from the powerless workers fighting each other due to the minimum wage hike.

* minimum wage: 최저 임금

This is not a competition between shops, but rather between small shop owners and employees fighting each other to claim a larger portion of their slender profit.

A minimum wage of 10,000 won

Even though achieving this goal wouldn’t necessarily bring us a rosy future, we thought that we would at least closely reach the goal. Of course, it’s not as if we weren’t aware that the fight would be long, rough and narrow…

Did we approach this issue too hastily?

 * hastily: 급히, 서둘러서

“From the perspective of running the country’s economy, I am concerned that the minimum wage hike could come as a burden [to policymakers] in the second half of the year.” - Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon
“It became actually difficult to achieve the target of raising the minimum wage to 10,000 won by 2020… I offer my apologies for being unable to keep my [presidential] pledge.

”

 * presidential pledge: 대선 공약

The Finance Minister, who is in charge of economic policies, seems to be perplexed, saying that it would be still difficult for the economy even though the minimum wage for the next year was decided at the lower level than the pledge. In the end, President Moon Jae-in apologized for not being able to keep his election campaign pledge.

Was raising the minimum wage to 10,000 won merely a distant and idealistic goal?

Was the government, blinded by the beauty of the goal, not able to hear the protests from the powerless in the allies?

The most important thing is…

That the high and mighty are feeling relieved while the powerless are fighting against each other…

* high and mighty: 갑

So unless the major corporations continue observing this situation as someone else’s business, the fight between the powerless will not come to an end…

The Gimpo Supermarket and Hyeongje Supermarket both appear in Yang Gwi-ja’s novel “One’s Daily Bread.”

“One’s Daily bread” is an installment of her series “The People of Wonmidong.”

In the 1970s and ‘80s, Wonmidong, located in Bucheon, was a neighborhood where the city’s poor people lived.

It was a place where conflicting ideas, such as growth and alienation, poverty and abundance, coexisted.

* alienation: 소외

That Wonmidong.

Refers to “a distant and beautiful town” in Chinese characters.

At least what is comforting is that Wonmidong has flourished and turned into a bustling neighborhood.

But of course, times have passed.

That is all for today’s anchor briefing.
