퇴장의 정치학
부자 하나면 세 동네가 망한다는 옛말이 있다. 여당이 지방선거에서 흥하자 야권에서 한꺼번에 세 명의 패장이 나왔다. 이중 안철수가 13일 “정치 일선에서 떠나겠다”고 선언했다. 조만간 독일로 출국할 예정이다. 홍준표는 이미 미국으로 떠났다. 유승민도 잠행 중이다. 한꺼번에 '퇴장 모드'다. 정치를 아주 안 한다는 뜻은 아니다. 잠시 은둔에 들어가지만 ‘흙먼지를 날리며 다시 돌아오리라’(권토중래ㆍ捲土重來)는 다짐이다.
은둔에도 스타일이 있다. 칩거, 외유, 정계 은퇴 선언…. 은둔의 3요소이나 정치인마다 배합이 달랐다. 원래 ‘칩거’하면 JP다. 그가 1968년 박정희 대통령의 견제로 공화당을 탈당하고 바둑을 두며 소일했다. 그때 찍힌, 검정색 선글라스에 흑백 바둑알이 영롱히 비친 사진은 칩거의 상징이다. 외유를 떠나며 남긴 ‘자의 반 타의 반’이란 말은 명언 반열에 올라있다. 다만 그는 정계 은퇴 선언까지 나가진 않았다.
화끈하게 정계 은퇴까지 선언하고 떠난 정치인이 DJ다. 나중에 약속을 번복해야 하는 부담은 따랐지만, DJ의 정계 은퇴→외유(영국)→정계복귀 코스는 하나의 전형이 됐다.

고생으로 치면 양김을 뛰어넘은 인사가 손학규다. 그는 2014년 7ㆍ30 재보선에서 패한 다음 날 정계 은퇴를 선언하고 전남 강진군 만덕산 속으로 들어갔다. “이제 만덕산이 내려 가라 한다”며 정계 복귀를 선언했을 때가 2016년 10월 20일. 무려 811일간의 칩거였다. 2008년 총선에서 패한 뒤에도 강원도 춘천 동내면에서 토종닭과 오골계를 치며 칩거했다. 무려 25개월을 참고 견뎠다. 고생한 것에 비하면 지금까지 남는 게 별로 없어 안타깝다.
문재인 대통령도 칩거한 적이 있다. 그는 외국으로 떠나거나 산속으로 들어가는 이벤트 없이 조용히 경남 양산의 자택에서 머물렀다. 어느 날 그의 측근에게 근황을 물어본 적이 있다. “밀양 송전탑 반대 시위 현장에 있다”고 했다. 그의 칩거는 사실상 ‘국민 속으로’였다.
안철수-홍준표-유승민 3인이 언제, 어떻게 돌아올지는 아무도 모른다. 금단(禁斷)현상이 만만찮을 것이다. 정치인이 잊혀진다는 걸 감내한다는 건 쉬운 일이 아니다. 하지만 원래 게으른 선비가 책장 세는 법이다. 책 읽다가 얼마나 읽었나 헤아려보고 또 헤아려보면 머릿속에 뭐가 남겠는가. ‘강태공이 위수 변에서 주문왕 기다리듯’ 진득해야 한다. 정치 안 하는 것도 정치다.
