그것은 참으로 미련해 보였습니다.
The scene of throwing eggs at rocks may seem foolish.
작은 충격에도 그만 깨져버리고 마는 계란.
Eggs easily break, even at the slightest impact.
반면 단단한 망치질에도 끄떡없는 바위는 애초에 상대가 되지 않는 적수였지요.
On the other hand, rocks are impenetrable, even when hammered.
* impenetrable: 들어갈 수 없는; 눈앞이 안 보이는
그러나 세상의 어딘가에서는 계란으로 바위를 치는 시도가 끊임없이 이어졌고…
Nevertheless, there are endless examples of eggs being thrown at rocks around the world…
* endless: 끝없는
그들 중에 누군가는 기어이 거대한 바위에 균열을 내기도 했습니다.
And some of these attempts ended successfully in the favor of the victims, creating a fracture in the massive rock.

겨울의 광장을 넘어 오늘을 만들어낸 시민들 역시 한없이 약한 존재들이 모여서 궁극에는 거대한 권력에 균열을 낸 마치 기적과도 같은 존재들이기도 합니다.
These weak citizens were able to achieve this miraculous result by gathering to raise their voices in the square in the cold winter.
'비통한 자들, 즉 마음이 부서진 자들에 의해서 민주주의는 진보한다'
“Democracy depends on our capacity to stand in the tragic gap with hearts of hope—which means hearts that can hold the pain to which hope exposes us.”
미국의 사회운동가 파커 J. 파머는 자신의 책 < 비통한 자들을 위한 정치학 > 에서 그렇게 말했습니다.
Parker J. Palmer, a social activist, stated that in his book, “The Politics of the Brokenhearted.”
"진보는 현상 유지에 안주하지 않으려는 평범한 사람들, 마음이 무너진 사람들의 동요에서 비롯되는 경우가 많았다"는 통찰이었습니다.
This was an insight to how “Democracy moves forward when ordinary people challenge the maintenance of the current status quo or when the brokenhearted feel unrested.”

현실과 열망 사이의 간극을 좁히기 위해서 애쓰는 사람들.
Individuals struggle to decrease the gap between reality and their strong desires
필경 그 시도들은 패배로 점철되고는 했기에 마음은 부서지고 무너져서 그들은 언제나 비통하다는 것…
Because these attempts usually end in a loss for these individuals, they are always hurt and bitter.

그가 정치인으로서 마지막 전하려 했던 메시지 또한 계란을 쥐고 바위와 싸웠던 무모한 이들을 향하고 있었습니다.
As Roh’s last message as a politician before his death, this letter congratulated the reinstatement of unjustly dismissed KTX workers. It was directed to the powerless individuals who fought for their rights against those in power, even though the attempt seemed to be like throwing an egg at the rock.
오랜 시간 이어온 그의 소망 또한 허황되거나 혹은 미련해 보였을 것이며…
His long-lived desire can also seem to be absurd or foolish…
* absurd: 우스꽝스러운, 터무니없는
결국 그는 스스로 견딜 수 없었던 불명예로 인해서 걸음을 멈추게 되었습니다.
Eventually he took his own life because he was unable to endure the accusations that he had received illegal funds because he was known as a clean politician.
또다시 뒤에 남게 된 마음이 부서진 사람들…
Once again the brokenhearted are left behind …
그러나 앞서 소개한 사회학자 파커 J. 파머는 부서져 흩어지는 마음이 아닌 부서져 열리는 마음을 이야기했습니다.
However, Parker J. Palmer, the sociologist that I introduced above, talks about a heart broken open, instead of apart.
"나는 여기서 멈추지만…앞으로 나아가길" 바란다던 그의 말처럼 비록 마음은 부서졌지만 부서진 마음의 절실함이 만들어낸 진보의 역사.
In Roh’s last note, he mentioned that “I stop here but the party should proudly move forward.”
Like what he said, even though people’s hearts have been broken, through their desperate efforts, history was able to progress and move forward.
그렇게 미련하고…또한 비통한 사람들은 다시 계란을 손에 쥐고 견고한 바위 앞에 서게 될 것인가.
Will the sorrow-filled people, who are reluctant to give up, still hold eggs in their hands and throw them at the sturdy rocks?
