Get to the bottom of the case (KOR)

Kim Kyoung-soo, governor of South Gyeongsang province, sought advice on reforming the chaebol, Korea’s family-owned conglomerates, from Kim Dong-won, a blogger using the ID Druking, who is at the center of a special probe on fake news and manipulation of online opinion.

According to digital evidence secured by a special investigation team, Kim, who was the spokesman for Moon Jae-in during his presidential campaign last year, asked the blogger if he could package popular ideas for chaebol reforms before Moon announced his plans on the theme in the following week. The blogger answered that he would prepare at least a list by the next day and visit him. Five days later, Moon made a speech to argue how disbanding the chaebols would be a path toward the genuine market economy at the National Assembly. What he said that day became his campaign platform.

How much of what the blogger suggested was reflected in Moon’s agenda cannot be known. But texts on the encrypted messenger platform raise serious questions about the relationship of Gov. Kim and Druking. It is appalling that an aide to a leading presidential candidate sought advice on policies from an online blogger. Kim has been repeatedly lying about his relationship with the blogger. When the Druking scandal first broke out in April, Kim claimed that his association with him did not go beyond simply expressing gratitude for his support for Moon out of formality. But it turns out that Kim had turned to him regularly. Druking even asked Kim about the online response to Moon’s address to the National Assembly.

The messages strongly suggest Kim could have been deeply involved in the online rigging campaign led by Druking. A witness already said Kim had been in the office to watch the test run of the automated software program designed to increase likes and add comments to online postings.

The special probe must thoroughly investigate the connection. The investigation received a blow after iconic progressive lawmaker Roh Hoe-chan committed suicide after he was found to have received money from an associate of Druking. The ruling party must stop interfering with the special probe. The probe has less than a month left. The team must come up with unarguable results.

거짓말 탄로난 김경수<경남도지사> … 특검, 흔들림 없이 전진하라
김경수 경남도지사와 ‘드루킹’ 김동원씨가 지난해 대선 전에 문재인 대통령 정책과 관련한 메시지를 주고받은 사실이 드러났다. 허익범 특별검사팀이 확보한 디지털 증거에 따르면 김 지사는 김씨에게 ‘재벌개혁 방안에 대한 자료를 러프하게라도 받아볼 수 있을까요? 다음주 10일에 발표 예정이신데 …’라는 문자 메시지를 보냈다. 이에 김씨는 ‘목차만이라도 지금 작성해서 내일 들고 가겠습니다’고 답했다. 5일 뒤 문 대통령은 국회에서 ‘재벌 청산, 진정한 시장경제로 가는 길’이라는 제목하에 연설했고, 그 내용은 대선 공약으로 이어졌다.
김씨 제안이 얼마만큼 반영됐는지는 알 수 없다. 하지만 보안 메신저 시그널을 통해 오고 간 문자를 보면 깊은 의심을 떨칠 수 없다. 당시 ‘온라인 논객’ 정도로 알려져 있던 김씨에게 주요 정책에 대한 의견을 구한 것도 황당하지만, 이런 사실을 부인해온 김 지사의 거짓말은 더욱 놀랍다. 김 지사는 지난 4월 드루킹 사건이 터지자 “(김씨에게) 의례적으로 감사 인사 같은 것은 보낸 적은 있지만 상의를 하듯 문자를 주고받은 게 아니다”고 해명한 바 있다. 그러나 실제로 김 지사는 문 대통령이 국회에서 연설한 날 ‘오늘 문 대표님 기조연설에 대한 반응은 어떤가요?’라고 문자로 묻기도 했다.
두 사람의 이 같은 관계는 김 지사가 김씨 일당의 댓글조작에 깊이 관여했을 것이라는 의심을 키운다. 당연히 "김 지사가 ‘매크로(댓글조작 프로그램) 시연’을 지켜봤다"는 진술 등 관련 증거에 눈길이 갈 수밖에 없다. 이제 허 특검팀은 수사의 본류인 김 지사 의혹을 철저히 규명해야 한다. 고(故) 노회찬 의원 타계로 충격을 받았겠지만 머뭇거릴 여유가 없다. 정치권 일각의 '특검 흔들기'도 당장 멈춰야 한다. 시한 연장이 이뤄지지 않으면 이제 수사 기간은 25일밖에 남지 않았다. ‘증거만 보고 가겠다’고 약속한 허 특검의 흔들림 없는 전진을 바란다.
