KARD proves that variety is the key: Mixed-gender group saw overseas success and will soon perform in Seoul

However, KARD, a mixed-gender quartet, took this unprecedented path, touring 13 countries and 25 different cities in Europe and North and South America last year.
As a result, the group caught the attention of the foreign media, which was drawn to the novelty and charm of the mixed-gender idol group. KARD ranked No. 2 on Billboard’s list of the Top Five K-pop Artists to Watch in 2017, and they were the only Korean artists on Fuse TV’s 16 Musicians About to Break in 2018.
“With their songs boasting the trendy, tropical-pop sound being touted by Justin Bieber and Kygo, along lyrics sharing both the male and female perspectives, fans around the world latched on to KARD,” said Fuse TV. They added that KARD’s success, with impressive sales in the United States and performances around the world “hint that K-pop’s traditional debut method isn’t as strict as it once was thanks to the scene’s increasingly international fanbase.”
The JoongAng Ilbo recently sat down with the group to discuss their new music, touring abroad and more. “We were lucky to get in the spotlight abroad first, but it is more urgent for us to get situated in [Korea],” said J.Seph. Humbly, he added, “We just took our first baby steps, and it is now time for us to run.” It was a humble response to how, compared to the success of KARD’s songs “Oh NaNa,” “Don’t Recall” and “Rumor” that were released before their official local debut, their albums released after their Korean debut didn’t catch on as much.
KARD’s new EP, “Ride on the Wind,” released on July 15, features dancehall and tropical house vibes, calling back to their previous success with summery sounds.
“‘Into You,’ from our last [EP], was dancehall, which originated from Jamaica, and I think it was hard for the public to [like the song] because the genre was unprecedented and had a heavy [feel],” said Somin. “This time, we added a soft [touch to the songs] so that they would be great to listen to in the summer.”
One of KARD’s strengths as a mixed gender group is their flexibility. In April, female members Somin and Jiwoo joined boy band Super Junior on stage to sing their song “Lo Siento” with them.
The group can also easily split up into subunits. Somin, a former member of disbanded girl groups Puretty and April, said, “I learned a lot performing on stage with seniors who have [been in the business] for 14 years. If I have the opportunity, I want to [release music] with Jiwoo as a subunit.”
The KARD members described their relationships as complementary.
“This is because we are so different in color and shape,” said J.Seph.
“Because our group is mixed in gender, we get a lot of questions asking if we ever have romantic feelings for each other,” Jiwoo added. “But we’re more like siblings or a crew than lovers.
“There aren’t even differences in the choreography between our genders. Even though it’s hard, we all master the powerful choreography because we hate the stereotype of women having to always dance in a sexy manner when dancing with men.”
KARD has a packed schedule for the rest of the year. After touring Asia and Australia earlier in 2018, they are expected to visit Mexico, Columbia, Chile and Argentina in September. On Aug. 19, KARD will hold their first local solo concert at the Yes24 Live Hall in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul. “We didn’t immediately start performing on the big stage. When we first went to Canada, [the concert hall] fit 200 to 300 people, and thanks to them, our upcoming South American concert will be held [at a venue so big] that it fits 5,000 to 6,000 people,” said Jiwoo.
“1,200 seats all sold out [for the concert] in Korea - I couldn’t believe it,” said J.Seph. “My hometown is Danyang County, North Chungcheong. I thought to myself, if there are seats available, I’ll have to rent a bus and bring people from my village.”

걸·보이그룹만 있나요, 외국서 더 유명한 혼성 4인조
카드(KARD)는 시작부터 독특했다. 보이그룹과 걸그룹으로 양분된 가요 시장에서 4인조 혼성그룹이라는 보기 드문 카드를 꺼내 들고는, 국내 음악방송을 뛰는 대신 해외 공연 무대에 먼저 올랐다. 지난해에만 유럽 및 북남미 13개국 25개 도시 투어를 돌았다. 남들이 가지 않은 길을 택한 것이다.
해외 언론은 되려 그 희소성에 주목했다. 혼성그룹의 장점을 살리며 다른 그룹은 결코 할 수 없는 섹시함과 터프함을 동시에 뿜어내는 모습에 매료된 것이다. 미국 빌보드 선정 ‘2017년 주목해야 할 K팝 아티스트 톱 5’에 이름을 올린 데 이어 미국 음악전문매체 퓨즈TV에서 ‘2018년 기대되는 팀’에 K팝 가수로는 유일하게 이름을 올린 이유다. 퓨즈TV는 “쉽고 트렌디한 트로피컬 사운드로 전 세계의 팬들을 사로잡았다”고 선정 이유를 밝혔다.
25일 세 번째 미니앨범 발매를 앞두고 서울 성수동에서 만난 카드는 겸손했다. 제이셉은 “운 좋게도 해외에서 먼저 주목받았지만 우리에게는 국내에서 자리 잡는 것이 시급하다”며 “이제 막 걸음마 떼고 뛰어가야 할 시점”이라고 말했다. 한국 정식 데뷔 전 발표한 ‘오 나나’, ‘돈트 리콜’ ‘루머’가 연이어 성공한 데 반해 데뷔 후 발표한 앨범이 되레 주목받지 못한 데 대한 자기반성이었다.
그렇다고 타협하진 않았다. “지금 가장 트렌디한 음악을 하고 싶다”는 바람을 담아 처음 선보였던 트로피컬과 뭄바톤 기반의 음악이 통했던 것처럼, 이번 앨범도 댄스홀과 하우스 리듬이 섞인 EDM 곡인 ‘라이드 온 더 윈드(Ride on the wind)’를 타이틀곡으로 들고 나왔다. 전소민은 “지난번 곡 ‘인 투 유’는 자메이카에서 시작된 댄스홀이라는 장르 자체가 생소하고 무거워서 대중에게 다가가기 어려운 부분이 있었던 것 같다”며 “이번엔 여름에 듣기 좋게 부드러운 곡선미를 추가했다”고 설명했다.
본격 라틴팝을 표방하는 ‘디멜로(Dimelo)’ 같은 곡도 수록돼 있다. ‘디멜로’는 스페인어로 ‘말해줘’라는 뜻으로 가사에도 한국어와 스페인어가 섞여 있다. 비엠은 “일부러 해외 팬들을 고려한 건 아니다. 처음 가이드 곡을 받았을 때 스페인어로 돼 있었는데 전부 한국어로 바꿔 버리면 그 느낌이 살지 않을 것 같았다”고 말했다.
혼성그룹이기에 변화무쌍한 시도가 가능한 것도 장점이다. 지난 4월 여성 멤버 전소민ㆍ전지우가 라틴팝 가수 레슬리 그레이스를 대신해 슈퍼주니어의 ‘로시엔토(Lo Siento)’ 한국어 버전 피처링에 참여한 것처럼 남녀 유닛이나 듀엣처럼 다양한 조합이 가능하기 때문이다. 앞서 걸그룹 퓨리티와 에이프릴 멤버로도 활동했던 전소민은 “14년 차 대선배들과 함께 무대를 하면서 많이 배웠다”며 “나중에 기회가 되면 지우와 함께 유닛으로도 활동해 보고 싶다”고 밝혔다.
이들은 하나의 정의에 갇히는 것을 원치 않았다. “서로 너무 다른 색깔과 다른 모양이어서 보색 관계에 가깝다”는 제이셉의 말처럼 여러 가능성을 열어두고 있다. 전지우는 “혼성그룹이라 그런지 서로 연애 감정은 없냐는 질문을 많이 듣는데 저희는 연인보다는 남매나 크루 같은 느낌”이라고 말했다. “저희 팀 안무에도 남녀 구분이 없잖아요. 남녀가 함께 춤을 추면 여자는 무조건 섹시하게 춰야 한단 고정관념이 싫어서 힘들어도 다 같이 파워풀한 안무를 소화하는 걸요.”
카드의 스케줄은 하반기에도 빼곡하게 채워져 있다. 상반기 아시아ㆍ호주 투어에 이어 9월에는 멕시코ㆍ콜롬비아ㆍ칠레ㆍ아르헨티나 등 4개국 투어에 나선다. 다음 달 19일에는 예스24 라이브홀에서 국내 첫 단독 콘서트를 갖는다. “저희가 처음부터 큰 곳에서 공연한 건 아니에요. 처음 캐나다에 갔을 때 200~300석 규모였는데 그분들 덕분에 이번 남미 공연은 5000~6000석 규모로 할 수 있게 된 거죠.”(전지우) “한국에서 1200석 매진이라니 믿기지 않았죠. 제 고향이 충북 단양인데 자리가 비면 버스 대절해서 마을 분들 모시고 올라와야 하나 했거든요.”(제이셉)
그렇다면 이번 앨범을 통해 카드가 얻고 싶은 수식어는 뭘까. “믿고 듣는 신용 ‘카드’요.” 지체 없이 말했다. “아무리 들어도 한도 초과 없는 신용 카드라니, 너무 좋지 않나요. 주목해야 할, 기대되는 팀도 좋지만, 반드시 들어봐야 할 팀이 되고 싶습니다.”
