Han Hyo-joo is happy to break out of her shell : ‘Illang’ star studied the original animated film in between takes

It’s been just over a week since “Illang: The Wolf Brigade” hit theaters. The film revolves around a member of a special police unit and his lover in the year 2029 as the two Koreas begin a five-year plan towards unification. The movie may not be performing as well as she would have hoped for, but for actor Han Hyo-joo, it has nevertheless been a chance to break out of her shell and try something new.

“I’ve heard other directors call me a ‘very stable actor,’” said Han in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “Stability has its strengths, but there are some downsides to it. It was like breaking out of that stable shell. I wanted to show something that would have people say, ‘Oh, she had this side of herself?’”

Having debuted in 2003, Han has filled up her filmography with numerous works like “Always” (2011), “Masquerade” (2012), “Cold Eyes” (2013) and “The Beauty Inside” (2015), which put her on the top of the list for many directors and fans. All her characters were natural with just the right amount of emotion. Although she makes it look easy, it’s all a result of the constant training that she pushes herself through.

“I always try to look at myself in an objective light on screen,” said Han. “I watch my past works and try to look at it as a character from the movie, not me. That was the case for this movie as well. But this time, it felt like I was more of a stranger. I got a new feeling [from myself], something unfamiliar. That was actually what I had hoped to get with this movie.”

Because “Illang” was based on the 1999 Japanese animation “Jin-Roh” directed by Hiroyuki Kimura and written by Mamoru Oshii, the actor was careful not to miss out on what fans of the original would be looking for. “I watched the original as if it was a textbook, even during the shoot. Even though the lines in the original were different, there were some that I wished I could use for this movie,” said Han.

In “Illang,” Han plays Yun-hee, the romantic interest of the main character Joong-gyeong, played by Gang Dong-won. In hopes of escaping their depressing reality, Joong-gyeong and Yun-hee fall into each other’s arms, which didn’t look convincing to some movie critics. “They make those choices because of love,” said Han. “I think it may have been better for those [emotions] to have been portrayed more deeply.”

Funny enough, even though the relationship between Han’s character and Gang’s failed to appeal to audiences, the two actors had been rumored to be dating. A photograph of Han and Gang walking together in the United States went viral on July 5, even though they had denied having any emotions for each other.

“There’s really not more to say,” said Han. “We had a meal because our schedules matched when we were in the United States. We were worried that [the rumors] were so big that it might damage the movie, but there was nothing else to it.”

According to Han, Gang is an actor she can learn a lot from and a helpful colleague who’s there to lend her a shoulder, but that’s it.

“We’ve done two films in a row together. And we said to ourselves, ‘This is just very natural.’ We didn’t care much about it. We just laughed about it,” said Han.

'인랑' 한효주 ”'안정적 연기하는 배우' 틀 깨고 싶었다”

배우 한효주가 '인랑'을 선택한 이유를 설명했다.
한효주는 25일 오후 서울 소격동 한 카페에서 진행된 영화 '인랑(김지운 감독)' 관련 인터뷰에서 "다른 감독님들이 나에 대해 '안정적으로 연기를 하는 배우'라고 하시는 걸 봤다. 안정적이라는 것이 좋으면서도 좋지 않은 면도 있지 않나"라고 말했다.

이어 "그런 안정감 속에서 틀을 깬다고 해야할까. 누가 생각해도 '이런 것 할거야'가 아니라, '이런 모습이 있었네'라는 틀을 깬 연기를 보여드리고 싶었다"고 밝혔다.

또 한효주는 "내가 내 모습을 스크린에서 볼 때 늘 객관적으로 보려고 노력한다. 전 영화들도 모니터링하며 '나'라기보다는 그 영화에 나오는 캐릭터로 보려고 노력했다. 이번에도 그랬다. 그런데 전작을 볼 때보다 더 낯설다는 느낌이 들었다. 새로운 느낌, 낯선 느낌이 많이 들었다. 이 영화를 선택하며 기대한 부분이기도 하다"고 이야기했다.

이에 대해 "가지고 있었던 얼굴보다도 새로운 얼굴을 꺼내주셨으면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그런 얼굴들이 조금 보여서 낯설더라. 기분이 좋기도 하면서 한편으로는 걱정이 되기도 했다. 익숙함보다는 새로움이 두려운 것이니까. 개인적으로는 좋았는데 받아들이시는 분들이 어떻게 받아들이실까에 대한 걱정이 들었다. 복합적인 마음이다"고 말했다.
이어 "영화를 찍으면서도 교과서처럼 원작을 꺼내봤다. 고민이 많이 될 때 교과서처럼 돌려보면서 대입할 수 있는 것은 대입하고, 참고할 수 있는 것은 참고했다"며 "영화 속 대사와 원작 속 대사는 다르지만, 원작 속 대사도 취할 수 있는 대사가 있더라"면서 원작의 대사를 인용하고 싶었다고 이야기했다.
"이윤희 캐릭터 입장에서만 놓고 봤을 때 '인랑'은 멜로 영화다. 개인적인 시선이다. 이 영화는 멜로 영화라고 생각하고 연기했다"고 말했다.

언론배급시사회를 통해 첫 공개된 '인랑'은 멜로 부분에 대한 혹평을 받았다. 이에 대해 "전체적으로는 아쉬운 부분일 수 있지만, 결국엔 사랑이라는 감정 때문에 흔들리고 그런 선택을 하게 된다. 임중경도 집단에서 개인으로 나와서 자신의 삶을 찾아가겠다는 결단을 내린다. 이유는 사랑이다"고 설명했다.

또 한효주는 "멜로가 더 깊었으면 어떨까하는 생각도 든다. 영화의 정서인데, '이것은 이 감정이야'라고 보여주는 것보다 모호하게 보여주는 거다. 전체의 정서로는 지금도 괜찮다고 생각한다. 다만, 멜로 부분을 더 분명하게 친절하게 표현했으면 어땠을까라는 생각이 들기도 한다"고 덧붙였다.
"(열애설 입장은) 지금 나와있는 게 다다. 미국 갔을 때 일정이 맞아서 밥 먹은 게 다다. 너무 커져서 영화에 다른 쪽으로 지장이 될까 걱정이지 다른 것은 없다"고 말했다.

열애설 후 '인랑' 쪽의 반응에 대해서는 "'밥 먹었냐?'라고 물어보시기에 '맛있었다'라고 했다. '괜한 것도 아닌데 다른 이슈로 시끄러워서 죄송하다'라고 했다"고 답했다.

또 한효주는 "(강동원과) 연달아 두 작품을 같이 하기도 했고, 저희끼리도 '그냥 자연스러운 것 아닌가'라고 이야기했다. 서로 크게 신경은 안 썼다. '그냥 그럴 수 있지. 그럴 수 있는 것 아닌가?'라고 하며 넘겼다"며 웃었다.

열애설의 주인공이 아닌 동료 강동원에 대해서는 "배울 점이 많은 배우다. 굉장히 힘든 캐릭터였고 지칠 때도 있을 텐데 그럴 때마다 의지를 많이 했다. 살갑게 도와주는 스타일이 아니라 무뚝뚝하면서 의지가 많이 되는 스타일이었다"고 전했다.

열애설의 이유로 등장한 '맛집을 공유하는 사이'에 대해서는 "워낙 맛있는 것 먹는 걸 좋아한다. 강동원도 맛집을 좋아한다. 평소에도 맛집을 공유하고 그랬다. 서로 경쟁하듯 맛집 리스트를 만들었다"며 웃어 보였다.

'인랑'은 남북한이 통일 준비 5개년 계획을 선포한 후 반통일 테러 단체가 등장한 혼돈의 2029년을 배경으로 한 영화다. 경찰 조직 특기대와 정보기관인 공안부를 중심으로 절대 권력 기관 간의 숨 막히는 대결 속 늑대로 불리는 인간병기 인랑의 활약을 그린다. '반칙왕' '장화, 홍련' '좋은 놈 나쁜 놈 이상한 놈' '악마를 보았다'의 김지운 감독이 '밀정' 이후 내놓는 신작이다. '공각기동대' 각본을 쓴 동명 일본 애니메이션을 원작으로 한다.
