ASIAN GAMES

Inter-Korean rowing won’t be broadcast on local TV

When South and North Korea compete as one in rowing and canoeing races at the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia, viewers in the South won’t be able to follow the action on television.

The Korean Broadcasters Association (KBA) said Monday that no feed for canoe sprint and rowing events will be available during the Aug. 18-Sept. 2 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.

The Koreas have assembled joint teams in the men’s and women’s dragon boat racing, which is a canoeing discipline, and three events in rowing. The KBA said there will be no International Signal production for these events, along with a few matches or events in volleyball, baseball, football, yacht, modern pentathlon, golf, soft tennis and cycling.

According to the KBA, the decision was made by the local organizing committee and South Korea’s rights-holding broadcasters had no say in the process.

In addition to canoeing and rowing, the Koreas will field a unified team in women’s basketball, and those matches will be available on local TV.

Women’s football squad departs for Indonesia

The South Korean women’s national football team departed for Indonesia on Monday to compete at the 18th Asian Games.

The team, led by head coach Yoon Duk-yeo, took a flight at Incheon International Airport to Palembang, where the women’s football competition will be staged. Yoon’s team had trained rigorously in sweltering weather at the National Football Center in Paju, Gyeonggi, since July 30.

Among 20 players, 19 flew to Indonesia. South Korean captain Cho So-hyun, who is with Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL, will join the national team on Aug. 22 after finishing her club schedule.

The women’s football tournament at this year’s Asian Games features 11 teams. South Korea is in Group A with Indonesia, Taiwan and the Maldives. North Korea, the defending champions, is in Group B with China, Hong Kong and Tajikistan.

BASEBALL

Ryu Hyun-jin to rejoin Dodgers after groin injury

After missing more than three months with a groin injury, Los Angeles Dodgers starter Ryu Hyun-jin will rejoin the team’s rotation this week.

With the Dodgers in Denver to face the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, LA manager Dave Roberts said the Korean lefty will come off the disabled list to start against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Ryu suffered a left groin strain during a start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 2, his sixth start of the season. He made two minor league rehab starts earlier this month, first at Advanced A and then at Triple-A, pitching nine innings in total and allowing only one run on seven hits.
