BASKETBALL

Inter-Korean basketball team defeats India 104-54

The unified Korean women’s basketball team crushed India 104-54 on Monday for its second victory of the 18th Asian Games.

North Korean guard Jang Mi-gyong had 11 points with eight assists and five steals in 20 minutes off the bench at Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall in Jakarta. It was just the type of stress-free victory that Korea needed after an 87-85 overtime loss to Chinese Taipei last Friday.

Everyone on Korea’s 11-player team got into action and scored, with South Korean forward Kang Lee-seul leading the way with 17 points.

Korea improved to 2-1 in Group X and will face Kazakhstan today in the final Group X contest. Before losing to Chinese Taipei, Korea beat Indonesia 108-40 last Wednesday.

The result was never in doubt from the opening tip-off. Korea scored eight straight points to start the game and ended the first quarter leading 22-12.

Head coach Lee Moon-kyu rested his entire starting lineup and played the second quarter with five reserves, including Park Ji-hyun, the team’s youngest member at 18.

Park, who sat out last Friday’s loss to Chinese Taipei, dropped 12 points in 20 minutes on 5-of-8 shooting.

Even after taking a 49-22 lead into the second half, Korea continued to push the ball and kept its defensive pressure. With some of the starters back on the floor, Korea extended its lead to 74-39 after three frames.

Korea then doubled up on India 30-15 to complete the lopsided win.

SHOOTING

Chung Eun-hye takes silver in women’s 10-meter air rifle

Korean shooter Chung Eun-hye won a silver medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle competition at the 18th Asian Games on Monday.

Chung scored 248.6 points to finish second behind Zhao Ryozhu of China, who won gold with an Asian Games record of 250.9. Nandinzaya Gankhuyag of Mongolia took bronze with 227.4.

This was Korea’s second medal in shooting. On Sunday, Lee Dae-myung and Kim Min-jung took silver in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event.

Chung finished in fourth place with Kim Hyeon-jun in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team competition on Sunday.

Kang Gee-eun added another silver in shooting, finishing one point short of Zhang Xinqiu of China in trap women. Shortly after, Ahn Dae-myeong added another medal in shooting, winning bronze in trap men.
