Cho Yong-pil isn’t done celebrating: The singer on performing and making a new album

Fans were ready to say goodbye to the singer for a while after he finishes the last of his shows in Yeosu, South Jeolla, on Oct. 6 and Changwon, South Gyeongsang, on Oct. 13, but Cho’s not done yet. Cho will make the most out of his year and hold encore concerts on Dec. 15 and 16.
Radio station MBC FM4U will be celebrating the singer’s career on Sept. 19 by playing eight hours of programming about Cho Yong-pil and his 50 years in the Korean music industry beginning at noon. The last two hours, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cho will be making a live appearance on “Bae Cheol-soo’s Music Camp” program, his first appearance since the 1990s, according to Cho.
“I’ve been lucky enough to end up here, after everything I’ve done just for the love of music,” said Cho to local press on Tuesday. His concerts are getting better and better as time goes on, a feat that he attributes to his constant attention to detail. “If we hold a concert on Saturday, for example, then we spend Sunday watching the video of the previous day and monitoring everything. So if one part of the show looks as if I’m dragging on, then I take it out or change it,” said Cho.
Not all his concerts have met his standards, mostly due to weather conditions, admitted Cho. He pulled off his Seoul and Uijeongbu concerts in the rain, after storms hit the Korean Peninsula.
“It’s okay for me to get wet, but if we put up a tent [on the stage] because of the instruments or the monitors, then there’s a limited amount of things we can get on the video so the cameramen feel annoyed and so does the audience - which I feel sorry about.”
The reason he insists on putting the concerts, nevertheless, is because of the energy he gets from the audience.
“During a concert, there are a lot of times when I can’t see the crowd because of the lights. But then when I do get to see them, and see them happy, then I feel really touched and get excited. And when I see someone cry, then I get emotional and start crying,” said Cho, referring to the time when he cried during his Daegu concert.
Cho also revealed his plans for his upcoming 20th album, which will come out next year.
“I haven’t been able to work on my album because we started the tour in May,” said Cho. “Most of the songs are written, and we’ll start mixing them in January.” He did consider working on them from time to time in between his scheduled events, but changed his mind.
The album will be filled with songs from Korean songwriters as well as producers from abroad as well.
“The composer team that worked with me on my album ‘Bounce’ sent me songs, and I’ve made appointments with some younger singers to meet them the day after tomorrow because they told me they will be bringing songs. There will be two to four songs that I’ve made myself.”
As long as it’s been for the veteran singer, making an album still comes across as a challenge. “Making an album felt like a duty in the ’80s, because I had to have an album out every year. I used to include songs I didn’t really like, just because I had to fill the numbers.”
“Now, decision making is getting harder for me, because I feel the pressure that this album has to be better than the last. Even right now, I’m trying to decide whether or not to have an orchestra backing up [some of the songs]. My working speed has inevitably gotten slower. I think a 55th anniversary performance might be hard,” joked the singer.
“I would like to release a song that’s easy to sing along for anyone,” added Cho.
Cho paid gratitude for the younger singers who are sending him congratulatory videos for his golden jubilee, including You Hee-yeol, Shin Seung-hun and Lena Park. Cho, who made his Japanese debut 1986 as a first-generation Hallyu [Korean wave] singer, congratulated younger singers in return.
“I was really surprised when Psy took the Billboard Charts in 2012 with ‘Gangnam Style,’ and I feel really proud of BTS that they’ve done it twice,” said Cho.
“This is an era when people can consume music from all over the world through platforms like YouTube. And so I hope that there will be a variety of more new experiments taking place in the future.”

‘가왕’ 조용필(68)은 올 한 해 동안 누구보다 바삐 움직였다. 데뷔 50주년을 맞아 지난 5월 서울 잠실주경기장 공연을 시작으로 대구ㆍ광주ㆍ의정부ㆍ수원ㆍ대전 등 전국 각지를 돌며 ‘땡스 투 유(Thanks To You)’ 투어를 이어가고 있기 때문이다. 다음달 6일 여수와 13일 창원을 끝으로 잠시 휴지기에 들어가나 싶었더니 12월 15~16일 서울 체조경기장에서 앙코르 콘서트 계획을 밝혔다.
오는 19일에는 MBC FM4U에서 정오부터 8시간 동안 특집방송 ‘조용필, 50주년 그 위대한 여정’이 진행된다. 오후 6~8시 ‘배철수의 음악캠프’에 출연하는 조용필은 “마지막으로 출연한 게 90년대 중반이다. 21세기 들어 첫 라디오 출연”이라며 기대감을 표했다. 반세기 인기 비결에 대해 “그저 음악이 좋아서 꾸준히 계속한 덕분에 여기까지 올 수 있었다”는 그다운 행보다.
11일 서울 성수동에서 기자들과 만난 조용필은 “공연이 후반부로 갈수록 보다 정돈돼 가고 있다”며 “토요일에 공연을 하면 일요일에는 처음부터 끝까지 전날 촬영한 영상을 모니터링해서 늘어지는 부분은 간결하게 줄이는 등 수정을 거듭한 덕분”이라고 말했다. 서울에 이어 의정부까지 빗속에서 ‘우중공연’을 펼친 그는 “나는 비를 맞아도 그만인데 악기와 모니터 때문에 천막을 치게 되면 영상에 담을 수 있는 장면이 제한돼 찍는 카메라도 답답하고 보는 관객도 답답해서 미안할 뿐”이라고 덧붙였다.
그럼에도 공연을 고집하는 이유에 대해서는 ‘관객이 선사하는 힘’을 꼽았다. 그는 “공연을 하다 보면 조명 때문에 관객석이 잘 보이지 않을 때도 많다. 그런데 한 번씩 관객들과 눈이 마주치고 행복해하는 모습을 보면 감동해서 더 신이 나고, 울고 있는 모습을 보면 뭉클해서 나도 모르게 눈물이 난다”고 말했다. 대구 공연에서 ‘비련’을 부르다 눈물을 쏟은 것 역시 같은 연유에서다.
내년 발매 예정인 20집에 대한 구상도 밝혔다. 당초 올 상반기 앨범을 먼저 발표하고, 하반기에 투어를 진행할 예정이었던 그는 “5월부터 공연을 먼저 시작하게 되면서 앨범 작업은 거의 못하고 있는 상태”라면서도 “곡은 대부분 나와 있고 내년 1월부터 믹싱 작업에 들어갈 계획”이라고 말했다. 새 앨범에 대한 질문이 많아 투어 중간에 믹싱을 맡길까 고민했으나 부분마다 쪼개서 작업하면 전체 톤이 하나로 유지되지 않을 수 있기 때문에 보류했다고 설명했다.
앨범은 자작곡과 국내 및 해외 작곡가 곡이 고루 채워질 전망이다. 조용필은 “19집 ‘바운스’를 만든 작곡팀도 곡을 보내왔고, 내일모레도 후배들이 곡을 가져온다고 해서 만나기로 했다”며 “직접 만든 곡은 2~4곡 정도 수록될 것 같다”고 밝혔다. 그는 “사실 80년대엔 매년 앨범을 내야 하니까 반의무적으로 냈다”며 앨범당 곡 수를 채우기 위해 마음에 들지 않는 곡을 끼워 넣기도 했다”고 털어놨다.
이어 시간이 흐르고 앨범이 쌓일수록 “지난 앨범보다는 더 나은 앨범이 돼야할 텐데 하는 부담감에 결정이 점점 더 어려워진다. 지금도 오케스트라 반주를 더 보강할지 말지를 놓고 고민 중”이라고 밝혔다. “아무래도 나이가 들다 보니 작업 속도가 더뎌졌다. 이제 55주년 공연은 힘들 것 같다”면서도 앞으로 목표에 대해 “누구나 쉽게 따라부를 수 있는 신곡을 발표하고 싶다”는 바람을 덧붙였다.
유희열·신승훈·박정현 등 50주년 축하 영상을 릴레이로 보내고 있는 후배들에게도 감사를 표했다. 1986년 일본에 진출한 원조 한류 스타인 그는 “2012년 싸이가 ‘강남스타일’로 빌보드에서 선전할 때도 정말 놀랐는데 방탄소년단이 두 번이나 1위를 하다니 정말 자랑스럽다”며 “지금은 유튜브를 통해 전 세계에서 동시에 음악을 소비하는 시대니 더욱 다양한 시도가 일어나길 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
