This is today’s anchor briefing.

“I would like to eat a melon!”

These were the last words of a 27-year-old young man before he passed away.
The cause of death was an excessive blood loss through coughing - symptoms of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was an infectious disease that has gripped the nation in fear for the past century.  A face as white as a sheet and blood stained on one’s handkerchief.  At that time, these symbols would be thought of as an artistic expression of sorrow, but one must not forget that the end result was always death.

Tuberculosis took the lives of many Western artists like Chopin, Emily Brontë, Franz Kafka, George Orwell while also effecting young Korean novelist like Lee Sang, Na Do-hyang and Kim Yoo-jeong. However, tuberculosis is not a disease that was prevalent only in the past.

“One third of the world's population is infected with the tuberculosis virus.
One third of the Korean population is also infected
35,000 people in Korea are diagnosed with the disease and 2,000 die every year because of it.

- Lee Jung-mo [Science is difficult for me too]

According to Lee Jung-mo, director of the Seoul Science Center, about one third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis. Korea, has 35,000 patients that are diagnosed with tuberculosis and 2,000 people die due to the disease each year. Tuberculosis is still a very dangerous disease. However, the familiarity that we have with the disease might be the reason why we are immune to the threat it poses to us.

MERS, the infection disease that dominated the public’s every waking moment with fear three years ago, has once again resurfaced, restoring our horror and panic. Even the memories of having to cage up an innocent camel in Seoul Grand Park have been brought to mind. MERS holds a special meaning to us all as it administers both horror and trauma in our systems. Both the nation and the society suffered from a horror that was invisible to the naked eye.

The Korean government, who announced that the MERS outbreak ended three years ago, is now once again up for test whether it can properly deal with the disease. Looking back… It’s a wonder why tuberculosis is not wiped out of existence even when there was an anti-tuberculosis drug made fifty years ago.

According to experts, there are many reasons why, but after the 1980s when tuberculosis patients drastically decreased the need to find a new treatment for the disease took a plunge as well. Eventually the world became indifferent to fighting off tuberculosis. This is why the most dangerous disease is in fact, not an actual disease, but negligence.

Even in the midst of days decorated with clear, cool skies we are still longing for the scent of a melon.
