Venom (15)

Based on Marvel Comics’ notorious anti-hero and Spider-Man’s popular rival, this movie centers on the disgraced, scandal-ridden reporter Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy, who attempts to revive his career investigating a sophisticated and unscrupulous corporate survivalist group, the Life Foundation. But after contacting an amorphous extraterrestrial symbiote that bonds with him, Eddie suddenly obtains superpowers and turns him into a gruesome facsimile of the heroic wall-crawler.

Directed by Ruben Fleischer of “Zombieland” (2009), Hardy is joined by Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed and Scott Haze.

Venom first appeared in a 1988 issue of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and the character was last seen in “Spider Man 3” (2007).



Christopher Robin (G)
Adventure / 104 / English / Oct. 3

This Disney movie is about a young boy Christopher Robin, who has grown up and left his childhood stuffed animal friends Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Piglet behind.

After the boy leaves for boarding school, he gets married, serves in the army and works arduously. His work is so demanding that he barely has time to spend with his family.

While Christopher lives on, his stuffed friends patiently wait in a mystical world, hoping for him to return and play with them until one day, Winnie the Pooh decides to travel through London and find Christopher. The two reunite, but things are not like it used to be.

Christopher becomes exasperated by Pooh’s absent-mindedness, and angrily tells Pooh that he is no longer a child. But by spending time with his childhood friend, Christopher gradually readjusts his priorities.

Directed by Marc Forster of “Stranger than Fiction” (2006), Evan McGregor plays Christopher in this uplifting movie.




Dark Figure of Crime (15)

Im Tae-ho, played by Ju Ji-hoon, is a convicted murderer who is imprisoned. But while in prison, he confesses to respected detective Hyung-min, played by Kim Yoon-seok, that he has committed additional murders.

Although nobody believes Tae-ho’s confession, Hyung-min delves into the case and attempts to uncover the mystery.

Demonstrating the fierce psychological confrontation between a detective and a killer, the crime thriller was inspired by an actual incident.

Though the film revolves around the murderer and the detective on the outside, at the heart of the movie are the victims, Kim said in an interview.

Directed by Kim Tae-kyun, the film co-stars Moon Jeong-hee and Jin Sun-kyu.



The Great Battle (12)
Action / 135 / Korean / Sept. 19

Set during the Goguryeo Dynasty (37 B.C. - A.D. 668), “The Great Battle” opens with Goguryeo warriors, led by Yeon Gaesomun (Yoo Oh-seong), taking on fighters from the Tang Dynasty, led by Emperor Taizong (Park Sung-woong). After a defeat, Yeon retreats, leaving nothing between the Tang army and Ansi, a fortress town located on the northern tip of the kingdom.

At the core of the film is the fierce battle between General Yang Man-chun (Zo In-sung) of Ansi and his troops fighting an army from the Tang Dynasty that far outnumbers them. This epic assault, which lasted for 88 days, shows the reckless fight led by Yang, and his miraculous success.

Directed by Kim Kwang-sik of “My Dear Desperado” (2010), the film co-stars Nam Joo-hyuk, Bae Seong-woo and Um Tae-goo as Yang’s soldiers. Seol Hyun from girl group AOA also appears as Yang’s brave sister.



The Soul-Mate (12)
Comedy / 97 / Korean / Sept. 26

Pairing up Ma Dong-seok and Kim Young-kwang as an investigative duo, this crime comedy revolves around a judo instructor named Jang-soo (Ma), who cares about nothing else but his daughter.

Unlike many of the characters Ma has played, Jang-soo does not care much about the injustices that happen around him and tries to stay out of trouble. However, he is forced to change after the ghost of Tae-jin (Kim), an overenthusiastic police officer in a coma, starts to haunt him.

Tae-jin is so ambitious about doing what is right that he does not let his death get in the way of pursuing justice. So he convinces the reluctant Jang-soo to help him investigate cases in the neighborhood.

Co-starring actors Lee Yoo-young and Choi Gwi-hwa, this buddy cop movie was directed by Jo Won-hee.




Autumn, Autumn (15)
Drama / 77 / Korean / Sept.26

Directed by Jang Woo-jin, “Autumn, Autumn” starts by showing three passengers sitting on a train heading to Chuncheon, Gangwon. The train is so crowded that passengers are standing pressed shoulder to shoulder.

In the crowd is Ji-hyeon (Woo Ji-hyeon), a 29-year-old who dreams of escaping his hometown of Chuncheon and finding a job in Seoul.

On the train ride back home following an interview in the capital city, Ji-hyun encounters a mysterious middle-aged couple who does not seem to know each other as well as it seems. It turns out that they connected over the internet and are meeting face-to-face for the first time.

There are two narratives that unfold in the film - the first half follows the young man Ji-hyeon trying to cope with anxiety and the second half follows the couple.




Fengshui (12)
Drama / 126 / Korean / Sept. 19

Directed by Park Hee-gon of crime action flick “Insadong Scandal” (2009), “Fengshui” is set in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It depicts people fighting over the perfect spot to bury their ancestors, which they believe directly affects the flow of where authority is directed.

Cho Seung-woo plays the warm-hearted fengshui master Jae-sang who loses his wife and a child after his attempt to interfere with the powerful Kim family’s plan to steal the propitious spot away from the royal family. Veteran actor Baek Yoon-sik plays the powerful member of the Kim family while Kim Sung-kyun plays Kim’s ambitious son.

Together with Heungseon, played by Ji Sung, Jae-sang attempts to interfere with the ever-expanding power of the Kim family. But their plan is obstructed when Jae-sang realizes that Heungseon had a different plan all along.

Moon Chae-won appears as a strong-willed gisaeng (female courtesan) with a plan to take revenge against the people that harmed her family during her childhood.



The Negotiation (15)
Crime / 114 / Korean / Sept. 19

Placing high profile actors Son Ye-jin and Hyunbin as the main leads, “The Negotiation” follows a suspenseful bargaining situation between Chae-yoon (Son), a negotiator from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and an illegal arms dealer Tae-gu (Hyunbin), who holds a Korean police officer, a journalist and a few other Korean citizens as hostages in Bangkok.

Communicating through video calls on big screens, Tae-gu threatens to kill the hostages if he does not get what he wants, which he does not hesitate to do. He physically abuses and kills the hostages without hesitation when the negotiator’s answers are not satisfactory.

The negotiation, which lasts 12 straight hours, does not go smoothly as Tae-gu does not reveal his true intention for the hostage situation, and instead, continuously demands to speak to seemingly unrelated people.

But Tae-gu’s conversations with these seemingly unrelated figures gradually peel back layers of truth about the corruption of authorities, of which Tae-gu is revealed to be a victim.
