Kepco calls for rate increase for industrial use at night

State-run Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) has recommended an increase in night industrial electricity prices to improve the energy consumption patterns.

Kepco CEO Kim Jong-gap said Tuesday that the power company has reviewed ways to adjust the cheap industrial rate and delivered its recommendations to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The ministry had pushed for an adjustment to rate system but has delayed the plan after local manufacturing companies voiced concerns over rising production costs.

“I have said that the inefficient consumption trends need to be corrected,” Kim said during a parliamentary audit on the utility firm.
