The musical, which is currently being staged at the Blue Square’s Interpark Hall in Hannam-dong, central Seoul, is up for 10 awards including Musical of the Year, Best Director, Best Music and Best Stage Design, among others. The Yegreen Musical Awards gives out a total of 21 awards in six categories. A total of 83 productions - 27 licensed musicals and 56 original musicals - are nominated this year.
“The Man Who Laughs,” produced by EMK Company, has been praised for its stage design, put together by designer Oh Pil-young.
“The Man Who Laughs” is based on the novel of the same name by French writer Victor Hugo. The story is set in 17th-century England, where there was a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
The story revolves around the main character Gwynplaine’s life and the unfair treatment he endures from society. The character is being played by Park Hyo-shin, Park Kang-hyun and Suho of the boy band Exo.
Competing against “The Man Who Laughs” for Musical of the Year is “Red Book.” The musical is also nominated for nine awards.
The event’s most prestigious award is the Yegreen Musical Award, which recognizes either a production company or a musical that made an impact in the country’s performing arts community.
This year’s nominees include production companies Live Company, Seensee Company and EMK Musical Company and the musical “Subway Line No. 1.”
