“Jeongjeongjigi dangdangjijin”
가지런히 늘어선 깃발과 사기가 충만한 군대의 모양을 의미하는 말로 중국의 고전 <손자병법> 에 등장합니다. 우리가 흔히 사용하는 '정정당당' 이란 말이 여기에서 온 것이지요. "깃발이 정돈되고 기세가 당당한 적과는 맞서 싸우지 말아야 한다." 즉, 상대가 강하면 싸우지 않고도 이길 수 있는 방법을 찾으라는 것.
This idiomatic phrase, which originated from a scene in the ancient Chinese military treatise “The Art of War,” depicts an army with high spirts and neatly arranged flags.
The common phrase “jeongjeongdangdang,” otherwise known as being “fair and square,” comes from the phrase “Jeongjeongjigi dangdangjijin.” It stipulates that “one should not fight with an army that has sprits as high their neatly arranged flags.” In other words, one should find another way to win instead of fighting a powerful opponent.

5·24 조치 해제를 검토하고 있다는 외교장관 발언에 대해서 미국의 대통령은 '승인'이라는 표현을 누차 사용해가며 제동을 걸었습니다. 한·미 양국이 긴밀하게 협의해야 한다는 점을 강조한 것이라고는 하지만 자칫, 주권 국가의 대북정책에 대한 '간섭'으로까지 비춰질 수 있는 단어. 그의 발언은 우리가 지금 처해있는 국제적 상황이 어떠한가를 새삼 돌아보게 했습니다.
U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly used the word “approval” after South Korea’s foreign minister signaled lifting of economic sanctions against North Korea which were originally imposed by South Korean government in 2010 after the sinking of a navy corvette that killed 46 sailors. The word, which was intentionally used to state that South Korea and the United States needed to closely cooperate before deciding to do anything, could be looked upon as the United States interfering with the Seoul’s North Korea policy. Trump’s statement prompts us to think about the international political situation that we find ourselves in.

그래서 어쩔 수 없이 다시 떠올린 한신의 고사. 지난 2003년 이라크 파병 문제로 뜨거웠던 시절. 미국의 압력에 의해서 결국 파병을 결정해야 했던 당시 노무현 대통령은 '한신도 무뢰한의 가랑이 밑을 기었다'는 고사를 인용했습니다. 훗날을 기약하기 위해서라면 한때의 수치와 치욕은 얼마든지 견뎌낼 수 있다는 오래된 이야기. 너무나 솔직했던 대통령의 말에 듣는 이들이 오히려 당황스러움을 감추지 못했던 순간이기도 했습니다.
Therefore, we have no choice but to think about another Chinese idiomatic phrase. In 2003, parliament was in a heated debate over whether to dispatch forces to Iraq. Korea finally decided to do so because of pressure exerted from the United States. When President Roh Moo-hyun announced the deployment to the public, he cited the phrase: “(General) Hanshin had to endure the embarrassment of crawling between a bastard’s legs.” This meant that in order to prepare for the future, one would need to endure temporary humiliation. Many listeners were taken aback by the frank, yet honest words of the president.

After a long and winding 15 years, nothing much has changed about our harsh reality. We live in a reality where lawmakers worry about the possible abusive language that our foreign minister might have heard from the all-powerful nation’s secretary of state solely because it would prove that she had somehow irritated them. Must we once again comfort ourselves with the following phrase?
