The Dragons relegated to second division after loss

Korean pro football club Jeonnam Dragons were relegated to the second division following a 2-1 loss to Daegu FC on Saturday.

Jeonnam surrendered a game-winning goal to Daegu’s Hong Jeong-woon in the 72nd minute in the K League 1 match at Gwangyang Football Stadium in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province. It was the team’s 21st loss of the 2018 season.

With the latest defeat, Jeonnam remains anchored at the bottom of the 12-team league table with 32 points, five points behind No.11 Sangju Sangmu. Jeonnam will play its season finale against Incheon United on Dec. 2, but regardless of that match, the team will be demoted to the second-tier K League 2.

This is Jeonnam’s first relegation to the second division since the club was founded in 1994.

The K League has been using a promotion and relegation system since 2013. Each season, the last place club in the K League 1 gets relegated to the second division the following season

The 11th-placed club will be determined in the season finale. Sangju is currently sitting 11th place with 37 points, but it is only two points behind No.10 Incheon United and No.9 FC Seoul. Sangju and Seoul are scheduled to go head-to-head on Dec. 2.
