Hallyu will reach 90 million people

The number of Hallyu fans around the world will soon reach 90 million, according to the “Global Hallyu 2018” report published Thursday by the Korea Foundation (KF).

Using data gathered from 113 countries, the organization analyzed the popularity of Korean popular culture and its rise throughout the world.

The number of Hallyu fans in December 2018 was 89 million, a 22-percent increase from 73 million the previous year, thanks to the enormous popularity of boy band BTS and other Korean content that is gaining popularity in Japan and China.

According to the report, Hallyu is gradually gaining more awareness in African and Central Asian countries, where Hallyu-related communities have increased from 73 in 2015 to 140 in 2018.

“Hallyu is at the forefront of strengthening the soft power of Korea, and the importance of related policies has also become crucial,” said Lee Si-hyung, director of KF.

“We hope that this report is useful in helping policy makers grow our country’s brand value.”
