It would be a major understatement to say that many people were both thrilled and touched after watching the 2018 film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has sold more than 9 million tickets in Korea alone. People laughed, sang along and even cried while watching the movie, but five men were possibly more moved by the movie than anyone else in Korea - the members of 0vueen Band, a Korean Queen tribute band formed in 1997.

For 20 years, the band has remained faithful to Queen and has continued to perform, even when they were somewhat forgotten by the public. Then, everything changed in the fall when the whole country caught Queen-mania. The film’s immense popularity comes as a present to the band because not only has their favorite band come back into the spotlight, but they now find themselves in the spotlight after years of waiting.

On Nov. 24, at a performance at Rolling Hall in Hongdae, western Seoul, the room was packed with Queen fans of all ages. After that performance’s success, the band found themselves taking the stage at the KT&G Sangsang Madang in Hongdae last Saturday. The JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, met them in their studio before the concert.

The band’s name 0vueen - pronounced yeongbuin, which means first lady in Korean - comes from the idea that there is not a queen in Korea, but a yeongbuin instead; plus, the name is spelled similarly. There are four members of Queen, but five members make up 0vueen: vocalist Fred Shin, guitarist Kim Jong-ho, bassist Mike An, drummer Park Jung-hyun, keyboard player Kim Moon-yong, and with the help of costume manager Tara Chang. Since vocalist Shin does not play the keyboard like Freddie Mercury, fulltime pianist Kim takes the key on Shin’s stead, while the other members take time off of their regular jobs to play.

Guitarist Kim is the only member of the band who has watched “Bohemian Rhapsody” only once. Kim says this isn’t because he didn’t like it, but because it was too overwhelming and he felt he would drown in his tears if he watched it again. “I used to think that Freddie was a fool for making mistakes on the stage,” said Kim. “But I couldn’t stop crying because I never realized the pain he had to bear off stage was so big. I felt like I owed him an apology.”

Bassist An added, “There were some scenes that were different from what actually happened. But it depicted the part where the [band’s] members support Freddie really well and stuck together before Live Aid.”

The band attributes the movie’s success to, obviously, the musical perfection of Queen’s music, which they explained was “as diverse as a meal with all the side dishes” and “able to capture everyone, even the youngsters, across all generations.”

“The emotions of Freddie, who lived a very painful and lonely life behind the spectacular stages resonated with young people,” said drummer Park.

To them, their band is more than just a simple tribute band, but rather a an expression of dedication that they’ve maintained for over 20 years. The band took more willpower to maintain than anticipated in the beginning, but has become something that now gets them through their daily lives. “At first, people told us to pull ourselves together and stop the nonsense,” said An. “But 20 years later, people tell us that we’re amazing.”

“I didn’t like Queen that much when I was younger because I thought they were just a shallow pop band,” said pianist Kim. “It wasn’t until my late 20s that I started really engaging deeply into their music. I even met my wife at one of their concerts. My son, who used to listen to Queen music when he was in his mother’s belly, is now a huge fan of Freddie’s. Queen is my life.”

Kim is also a fervent collector of anything that has to do with Brian May, and has managed to even copy the movement of May’s fingers when he plays the guitar. The total cost of the things he’s bought so far - a licensed guitar, a signed amplifier and effector - would amount to the cost of a second-hand car. He has even collected hundreds of sixpence coins to imitate May’s method of playing guitar - the guitarist long used the coins instead of a proper guitar pick. He got his guitar signed by May in 2014 when he visited Korea and considers it his most prized possession.

The band member who gets to bask in the spotlight the most is lead-singer Shin. According to Shin, he keeps to a strict diet routine to keep himself in tip-top shape for the group’s performances.

“I’m pressured to look just like [Mercury], not just sound like him,” said Shin. “I’m always practicing my songs and am always on a diet. I only eat a meal a day because there are a lot of performances these days. And I’m always humming ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ when I’m driving.”

The best thing about the movie’s success is that the band no longer has to explain their music to the audience. But they are also fully aware that the fad will eventually pass, as was the case when both the musical “We Will Rock You” (2008) and Queen visited Korea in 2014. They’ve seen it come and go, but it doesn’t matter for them because they were born to love Queen nevertheless.

“We’ll always be with Queen in the coming days,” said An.

운전하다 길이 뚫리면 자동적으로 ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’를 흥얼댑니다.(웃음)
