Since appearing in the horror movie “Record” in 2000, actor Um Jee-won has shown off her talents as an actor by playing a wide range of characters with different charms. The 41-year-old marvelously pulled off the role of a desperate single mother in search of her kidnapped child in the thriller “Missing” (2016), played an indifferent principal in the horror film “The Silenced” (2015) and took on the role of a police officer involved in a fraud investigation in the action-packed crime title “Master” (2016).

In her latest offering, Um plays a pregnant woman named Nam-ju who will do anything to save money for her baby on the way.

Co-starring Jung Jae-young, Kim Nam-gil and Lee Soo-kyung, “The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale” is a comedy that revolves around a suburban family whose lives get disrupted after the elderly father (Park In-hwan) is bitten by a zombie. Instead of becoming a horror film, however, the movie takes a turn and opts for humor, starting with the father suddenly growing younger after he is bitten. The family then captures the zombie (Jung Ga-ram) and starts an underground operation where the zombie bites the arms of people who want to grow younger. The town becomes a catastrophe as they all transform into lifeless creatures instead of growing younger.

“I found the script very interesting,” Um said about the film during an interview held last week in central Seoul. “Personally, I like stories that are less popular - something that diverges from the usual. In that sense, I loved the script.”

She continued, “I thought the script allowed a lot of room for imagination. After seeing the story on screen, I thought it [generally] turned out as I had expected. Editing is up to the director […] I believe the final outcome of the film reflects a bit of the director’s taste.”

This is the directorial debut for rookie director Lee Min-jae, who previously edited the romance comedy flick “A Good Day to Have an Affair” (2007).

Um’s interest in zombies is part of the reason she said yes to the role.

“I really like zombies. I have been watching ‘The Walking Dead’ since it first came out.”

And while she enjoyed local zombie movies “Train To Busan” (2016) and “Rampant” (2018), she did not think there was a suitable role for her in these titles.

The humorous approach to the zombie genre that “The Odd Family” has may divide audiences, but Um says she’s not too worried about it.

“You never know whether there will be more people who enjoy the film than those who dislike it.” The actor added, “Though the zombies are an important part of the movie, what actually leads the story is the family.”

For the role, Um had to transform herself into a woman who lives in the countryside, a change that she was eager to take on.

“Instead of feeling like [the change] was a burden, it was something that I had wanted to try,” said Um. “Acting entails emotional changes, but it also involves changing your appearance. When your looks change, your acting gains momentum. I enjoyed the process of creating my character.”

To do that, she had to try out many different looks to find the perfect hair and makeup for Nam-ju. “The [short curly] hair and the makeup are the result of numerous tests. [The makeup team and] I tried many different kinds of hair and makeup to evoke a specific look for the character.”

Even in her 19th year in the entertainment industry, Um still believes in the power of film.

“I still believe that the world can be changed by movies.” Um continued, “Movies [allow actors and audiences] to speak and think about things [that they had not dared to speak or even think about.] That is the reason I am still working in the film industry.”

“But just when I thought that I was concentrating too much on [heavy films,] I was offered a role in ‘The Odd Family.’”

Even for an actor with years of experience, comedy was a challenge.

“There are many types of comedies and picking the right one is not easy. If the movie focuses too much on drawing laughs, it weakens the characters. Collaborating with the other actors on set is very important, not to mention how the movie is edited.” Um added, “The more I think about comedy, the more I think it should be done only by certain people.”

The movie arrived in theaters on Wednesday. It runs for 112 minutes and is rated 12 and above.
