그것은 합법을 가장한 선동이었습니다. 7000여 개 유대인 상점과 개인 주택이 약탈당한 1938년 11월 9일. 깨어진 유리창이 마치 수정처럼 빛났다 하여 역사는 그날을 '크리스탈 나흐트' 즉, 수정의 밤이라고 기억합니다.
This was an incitement shadowed by legitimacy. On Nov. 9, 1938, around 7,000 Jewish stores and homes were plundered. The history remembers this night as “Kristallnacht” or “crystal night,” as the broken windows of the stores seemed to shine like crystals in the middle of the night.

유대인 대학살의 전주곡이 된 이 사건은 히틀러의 끊임없는 유대인 혐오 발언에서 비롯됐습니다. 이른바 헤이트 스피치, 무언가 특정한 목적을 가지고 타인을 의도적으로 해하고자 하는 발언.
The event, the prelude of Holocaust, initially began with Hitler’s endless statements reflecting his hate for Jews. This is the so-called hate speech, or making comments with the intention to harm someone.

사람이 내뱉는 말이 두려운 이유는 그것이 결국에는 사람의 영혼까지 파괴할 수도 있기 때문이겠지요. 그러나 민주사회에서는 나의 입이 자유롭듯, 타인의 입 또한 자유로워야 하는 것이 원칙이니… 지금의 소동 또한 어찌할 수 없는 일이라고 해야 할까.
The reason why we’re afraid of what others might say is probably because we believe that in the end, it is going to destroy our souls. But in a democratic society, we are free to say what we want to say, and the same applies to others. Thus current commotion is something that is beyond our control.

그들은 국회 한복판에서 80년 광주의 시민을 일컬어 종북 좌파가 만들어낸 '괴물'이자 '폭도'라고 했습니다. 이미 역사적 검증과 법적 판단이 마무리된 지 오래되었고 당시의 권력자조차 부정한 사건에 대한 주장이었습니다.
In 1980, they called the citizens of Gwangju “the monsters that Pro-North Korea leftists created” and called them “mobs” in the middle of the National Assembly. This was the opinion of the people even after the event’s historical verification and the legal judgement had been made.

이 역시, 합법을 가장한 보이지 않는 선동은 아닐까… 총 대신 입으로 가하는 학살은 40년이 지난 오늘까지 길게 이어지고 있습니다.
This also could be seen as an incitement shadowed by legitimacy. A Holocaust conducted verbally instead of with guns has been carried on for almost 40 years now, and still continues to this day.

"그러니까 광주는 고립된 것, 힘으로 짓밟힌 것, 훼손된 것, 훼손되지 말았어야 했던 것의 다른 이름이었다. 피폭이 아직 끝나지 않았다"
“Therefore, Gwangju was the name of something that was isolated, trampled by force, damaged, and also something that shouldn’t be damaged in the first place. The bombing still isn’t finished.”

These were the words that writer Han Gang, who wrote about Gwangju in 1980, muttered after seeing society still hadn’t changed. A “crystal night” shines like the pieces of glass that these people have shattered just because history can be viewed from different points of view.
