Stepping back into the spotlight: After a break to be with family, Song Il-kook takes the stage
The play, written by French writer Yasmina Reza, is a black comedy that begins with an argument between two 11-year-old boys. It premiered in London in 2008. It received the Tony Award for Best Play and an Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2009.
The play touches on the selfishness people hide in their own hypocrisy, and the truth that comes to light when their interests collide. The parents of the two boys argue over how to solve the situation, and end up getting themselves into a petty fight - just like their children. Song plays the father of the boy who has been beat up alongside actor Lee Ji-ha, who plays the mother. The other parents are played by actors Nam Kyung-joo and Choi Jeong-won.
The play started Saturday at the Seoul Arts Center, southern Seoul, and will run until March 24. It comes two years after a successful run in 2017, which Song also took part in. This is the first production he’s been a part of since.
“I was so happy to be a part of this piece,” Song said in a recent interview with the JoongAng Ilbo. “I happily said that I will be taking part when I learned that everyone from the cast in 2017 would be coming back together.”
While taking a break from acting, he was able to spend quality time with his family in France.

“I didn’t get to watch TV much, even though my mother (former Rep. Kim Eul-dong) watched a lot of television while she was a member of the National Assembly. She told me, ‘Acting reflects trends. I watch television to make sure I know it,’ but I, on the other hand, let go all of that. It was because of my wife’s decision to keep the children away from TV - we didn’t buy one at all. But thanks to all the time I spent with my family, I’ve actually gotten better with the details of my acting.”
His triplets are almost as popular as he is, but he’s not planning on putting them back on television, as they will be attending elementary school in the coming months - sad news for fans of the boys.
“It’s such a mystery how they were born at the same time from the same belly, but they’re also so perfectly different from each other. The first one’s a scholar, the second one’s a talker and the third one is very emotional. But none of them learned French. In fact, the teacher had to learn Korean because there were three of them in one class (laughs).”
While his time with his family is full of good memories, he also recalled that it was the first time that he raised his voice in an argument with his wife. But that, too, was helpful for his acting. It may have been 22 years since he debuted as an actor, but he’s still learning lessons as he goes along in his life.
“In the scene where I’m having an argument with my wife in the play, I just screamed the whole way through in 2017,” said Song. “But this time, I learned that there are times when you go hard and soft, even when you’re in a fight.”
His most well-known works such as “Jumong” (2006) and “Jang Yeong-sil” (2016) are TV dramas, and the only play that’s he’s ever been in apart from “Carnage” is “I Am You,” which he appeared in multiple times, in 2010, 2011 and 2014. Song considers being in a theater productions as “acting lessons, that I get paid to be in along the way.” Through his plays, he says he has been reborn as an actor.
“I felt my limitations as an actor with ‘I Am You’ in 2010,” said Song. “I went to my mother [who also used to be an actor.] I used to go home to her every day and practice until dawn.”
When talking to Song, a lot of his family members come up in conversation, not only his sons, but his mother and also his grandfather, the late politician Kim Du-han. It might be somewhat burdensome for someone to always have their family members’ names come up, but Song’s learned to deal with it.
“I don’t think an actor is someone who chooses [what he wants,] but someone who gets chosen,” said Song. “I’ve actually never chosen what I’d like to do. If I get chosen, I do my part gratefully. I have a lot to learn, but I try to overcome that by trying my best. I record every practice and play, go home and study to see what I have to correct.”

배우 송일국(48)이 무대로 돌아온다. 16일부터 3월 24일까지 서울 서초동 예술의전당 자유소극장에서 공연하는 연극 ‘대학살의 신’에서 자수성가한 생활용품 도매상 미셸 역을 맡았다. 그의 연기는 2년 만이다. 2017년 같은 작품에 출연한 이후 공백기를 보냈다. 공연 개막을 앞두고 만난 그는 “연기를 하며 너무 행복했던 작품이다. 2017년 출연진 그대로 다시 뭉친다고 해서 흔쾌히 출연을 결정했다”고 말했다.
연기를 쉬는 동안 그는 프랑스 파리에 머물렀다. “판사인 아내의 해외 연수 일정에 맞춰 세쌍둥이 아들들과 함께 ‘가족 재발견’의 시간을 보냈다”고 했다. “프랑스에서 값이 싼 와인을 원 없이 먹다 보니 체중이 10㎏이나 늘었다”는 그는 “미셸 캐릭터에는 살찐 모습이 어울린다. 어차피 쪄야 했다”면서 웃었다.
프랑스 작가 야스미나 레자가 쓴 ‘대학살의 신’은 11살 두 소년의 싸움에서 시작되는 블랙 코미디다. 때린 아이의 부모인 알랭(남경주)ㆍ아네트(최정원)와 맞은 아이의 부모 미셸(송일국)ㆍ베로니크(이지하)가 만나 벌이는 설전을 통해 가식과 위선 속에 감춰져 있던 인간의 민낯을 보여준다. 2008년 영국 런던에서 초연한 뒤 2009년 토니 어워즈(최우수 작품상, 연출상, 여우주연상), 올리비에 어워즈(최우수 코미디상) 등을 휩쓸며 세계 공연계에서 작품성을 인정받은 연극이다.
공백기에 인간 송일국, 배우 송일국에는 어떤 변화가 있었나.
“완전히 가족하고만 지냈다. ‘이케아 박사’가 됐을 만큼 집안 살림도 잘하게 됐다. 여행도 많이 했고, 박물관ㆍ미술관도 많이 다녔다. 행복한 시간이었다. 파리에 사는 동안 TV는 전혀 보지 못했다. 어머니(김을동)는 국회의원을 하면서도 TV를 열심히 보셨다. ‘연기도 트렌드야. 내가 그 끈을 놓지 않으려고 드라마를 보는 거야’라고 하셨는데, 나는 TV를 완전히 끊은 셈이었다. 아이들 교육상 TV를 사지 말자는 아내 말을 따라서다. 하지만 가족들과 가깝게 부딪혔던 시간 덕에 디테일한 연기를 좀 더 잘할 수 있게 된 것 같다.”
삶 자체가 연기 훈련 과정이었다는 얘기였다. 2008년 결혼한 아내와 언성 높여 싸워본 것도 파리에서가 처음이었다. 지난해 12월 ‘대학살의 신’ 연습을 시작하며 그 효과를 제대로 실감했다. 그는 “극 중 아내와 싸우는 장면을 연기할 때 2017년엔 처음부터 끝까지 소리만 질렀다. 그런데 이번에는 싸우는 중에도 수축과 이완의 순간이 있다는 게 보이더라”고 했다.
송일국은 연기 경력 22년차 배우다. 1998년 MBC 공채 탤런트로 데뷔했다. ‘주몽’ ‘애정의 조건’ ‘장영실’ 등 히트작은 주로 TV 드라마다. 2014∼2015년 세 아들을 데리고 출연한 예능 프로그램 ‘슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다’도 그의 대표작이 됐다. 연극은 ‘대학살의 신’과 2010, 2011, 2014년 출연한 ‘나는 너다’ 가 전부다. 하지만 그가 연극을 생각하는 마음은 각별하다. “연극은 내게 수업이다. 그것도 돈 받는 수업”이라며 “감사한 마음에 늘 간식 담당을 자처한다”고 말했다.
연극을 통해 무엇을 배웠나.
“배우로 다시 태어났다. 2010년 첫 연극 ‘나는 너다’를 하면서 내 한계를 여실히 느꼈다. 리딩 연습까지는 그냥 넘어갔는데 블로킹(동선) 연습이 시작되니 바닥이 드러났다. 할 수 없이 어머니를 찾아갔다. 어머니는 ‘프로를 가르치는 선생님’으로 유명했다. 유동근ㆍ박상원ㆍ정광열 선배 등이 우리 집에 와서 연기를 배웠다. 나는 ‘어머니의 연기 재능이 나한테 없다’고 생각해 어머니에게 연기를 배우기 싫었다. 하지만 ‘똥줄이 타는’ 상황이 되니 어쩔 수 없었다. 연습을 마친 뒤 어머니 집으로 퇴근해 동작 하나하나 맞춰가며 새벽까지 연습했다. 어머니도 ‘가르쳐서 보내야 욕 안 먹을텐데’라고 생각하신 것 같았다. 함께 무대에 선 박정자 선생님에게도 배운 게 많다. ‘연습할 때는 부족함을 채우려고 노력하지만 무대에서 관객을 만날 때는 누구도 나를 대체할 수 없다는 자신감을 가지라’고 하셨다.”
‘송일국’이란 이름 앞에는 늘 가족의 이름이 붙어있다. ‘김두한 손자’ ‘김을동 아들’에서 이젠 ‘삼둥이 아빠’로 통한다. 가족의 이미지가 늘 따라다니는 상황에 대해 그는 “어쩔 수 없는 숙명으로 받아들인다”고 했다. 하지만 “이제 아이들을 데리고 TV에 나올 생각은 없다”고 못 박았다. 세쌍둥이 대한ㆍ민국ㆍ만세는 올해 초등학교에 입학한다. 아이들 근황을 묻자 “같은 배에서 동시에 태어났는데 완벽하게 다르게 자란다는 게 너무 신기하다”면서 “첫째는 모범생 스타일, 둘째는 말을 잘하고, 셋째는 감성적”이라고 말했다. 또 “프랑스 유치원을 다녔는데도 프랑스어는 못한다. 세 명이 한 반에 있다 보니 도리어 프랑스 아이들과 선생님이 한국어를 배웠다”는 에피소드를 전하며 ‘아빠 미소’를 지었다.
앞으로 활동 계획은.
“특별한 것은 없다. 배우는 선택하는 사람이 아니라 선택받는 사람이다. 그동안도 작품을 골라본 적이 없다. 선택을 받으면 감사하게 생각하며 연기한다. 나는 부족한 점이 많지만 노력으로 커버하는 배우다. 런스루(처음부터 끝까지 중단하지 않고 실제처럼 하는 연습)부터 실제 공연을 매회 다 녹화하고 집에 가서 다시 보며 고칠 점을 찾는다.”
