Prosecutors raid offices over Sohn’s speculation

Prosecutors raided the state cultural agency and a city office Tuesday as part of a probe into allegations that a former ruling party lawmaker used insider information to speculate on property.

The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office sent investigators to the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA), located in the central city of Daejeon, and to Mokpo City Hall in the southwestern city in South Jeolla, its officials said.

The purpose of the raid was to collect evidence related to suspicions that Sohn Hye-won, a former Democratic Party (DP) legislator, had her relatives and aides buy properties in an old district of Mokpo before authorities designated it as a cultural asset site, they said.

She’s been accused of using information obtained while serving on the parliamentary culture committee to buy the properties. Opposition parties have urged the DP to launch a parliamentary probe and a special counsel investigation into Sohn.
