태극기를 망설임 없이 한 번에 그릴 수 있을까… 혹시나 민망한 분들을 위해 통계로 답을 대신한다면 태극기를 제대로 그릴 줄 아는 사람은 전체 열 명 중 여섯 명꼴, 어떤 조사는 열 명 중 셋밖에 안 된다는 결과도 있습니다.
Can you draw a Taegeukgi without thinking about it? To those ashamed to admit that they can’t, here’s a little statistic that might make you feel better. Some research shows that six out of 10 people say they knew how to properly draw the Taegeukgi, while other statistics say that only three out of 10 can.

그래서인지 태극기를 둘러싼 실수담은 차고 넘칩니다. 대통령이 거꾸로 된 태극기를 흔드는 민망한 일도 있었고 대통령 특별기에 달린 태극기도 한때 물구나무를 섰습니다.
This is probably why there are so many cases of the Taegeukgi being misused. There was that embarrassing moment when a Korean president waved the Taegeukgi upside down and another time when a special presidential plane displayed the Taegeukgi hanging upside down as well.
방송사마저 태극기를 거꾸로 사용한 일은 예전부터 가끔씩 벌어진 일이었습니다. 그래서 우리의 국기는 왜 이리 복잡하게 만들어졌을까 하는 푸념도 나올 만합니다.
It has also been easy to see the flag flying upside down on television. So, it’s understandable that people complain that our national flag is too complicated to draw.

그러나 태극기란 거꾸로 들었건 잘못 그렸건, 그 자체로 의미를 갖는 것이 아닐까… 나라를 빼앗긴 사람들이 마지막까지 품고자 했던 간절함의 상징…
But regardless of it being upside down or right side up, the Taegeukgi has its reasons for being the way it is. It is the symbol of our ancestors’ last hope after they lost the country.
물론 제 모양을 갖추면 더욱 아름답겠지만 태극기가 어떤 모양이든 본질은 달라지지 않는 법이니까요. 그들 또한 태극기를 거꾸로 흔들었습니다. 하긴 그들이 거꾸로 흔든 것은 태극기만은 아닙니다.
Of course, it would be much more beautiful with its complete shape, but regardless of its appearance, the essence of it never changes. They too, had waved their flags upside down. But that wasn’t the only thing they waved upside down.

남의 나라 국기인 성조기도 거꾸로 흔들긴 했지요. 그것을 탓하는 것은 아까 말씀드린 대로 어찌 보면 본질적인 건 아닐 수도 있습니다.
They also waved the American flag upside down as well. But to blame them of mistreating the flag is missing the point.
그보다 사실 더 본질적인 '불편함'은 무엇인가… 80년 5월의 광주. 그 순간을 눈으로 목격한 이들은 하나같이 태극기를 마음에 담았습니다. 왜 우리는 국가권력의 총에 맞으면서도 태극기를 흔들었을까…
More importantly, the essential discomfort that should be our main consideration? It was May 1980 in Gwangju. People who witnessed the scene have the Taegeukgi in their hearts. Why did we wave the flag, even when we were being shot by state authorities?

왜 군인이 죽인 시민들의 관에 태극기를 덮었던 것일까… 그리고 훌쩍 40년이 지나 지금 태극기를 흔드는 사람들은 왜 가해자를 비호하고 피해자를 괴물이라 부르는가…
Why did the soldiers cover up the dead bodies of the citizens with a Taegeukgi? And why, after 40 years, are the people suddenly protecting the assailants and calling the victims ‘monsters’?

그들이 위와 아래를 뒤바꾼 채 흔드는 태극기는 그들에 의해 비뚤어진 우리의 아픈 역사를 고스란히 내보이고 있습니다.
The Taegeukgi that they waved upside down completely reveals the painful memories of our history that was distorted.
