LG to donate 10,000 air purifiers to local schools

LG Group will donate 10,000 air purifiers to schools nationwide in collaboration with the government.

The news was shared in a tweet on Tuesday by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon.

“LG Vice President Kwon Young-soo announced a decision today made in a meeting of the company’s top executives,” he said in the post. “Kwon said, ‘[the company] wanted to support the government’s action against fine dust’ and explained the plan was to run factories at full capacity to provide the air purifiers by March.”

Earlier this month, Education Minister Yoo Eun-hae announced that the government would install air purifiers in all schools this year, including kindergartens, and secure more government funding for that purpose. According to government data, 42 percent of all 272,728 classrooms in Korea are not equipped with air purifying facilities.

In a statement released after Lee’s tweet on Tuesday, LG said there was “an agreement among our top management, including Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, that the company should play a role in protecting children and teenagers from fine dust and reduce inconveniences.”

Under the plan, LG Electronics’ PuriCare air purifier will be installed in schools nationwide. The large-sized model can cover areas up to 100 square meters (1,076 square feet), around 1.5 times the size of an average elementary school classroom.

Apart from the air purifiers, the group will also offer mobile carrier LG U+’s Internet of Things alarm service. It comes with sensors that monitor the amount of fine dust in the air and sends alerts via mobile apps. LG’s smart speakers will help people control the air purifiers via voice command. The total amount of support will be 15 billion won ($13.3 million), LG said.

LG said that it will make an effort to distribute air purifiers as fast as possible in collaboration with the government. Younger grades will be the first to receive air purifiers.
