Cha Tae-hyun leaves all TV shows

Actor Cha Tae-hyun will step down from all TV work after being accused of betting money while playing golf overseas.

The accusation came out Saturday during a news program on KBS. The broadcaster said the evidence that Cha had been gambling was found in the KakaoTalk chat history of singer Jung Joon-young. It reported Cha and comedian Kim Jun-ho played golf and he won over two million won ($1,760) in 2016. A photo showing the handful of 50,000 won bills that Cha had won was shared through KakaoTalk.

In a statement released by his agency, Blossom Entertainment, Cha said the game was actually played in Korea and he took the bet as nothing more than a fun wager with friends. He added that the money was returned to the other players.

“It was something we did for fun, but I’m very ashamed to see myself posting such things on a group chat,” said Cha in an official apology, adding that it is an “unacceptable” thing to do as a public figure who has been loved so much. He apologized to fans and those who had been watching broadcaster KBS’s “2 Days & 1 Night” show that he appeared on.

The broadcaster has announced the show will be indefinitely suspended due to the scandal involving cast member Jung. The show was responsible for bringing Jung back into the mainstream after he was cleared of accusations that he recorded himself having intercourse with his then-girlfriend without her consent. He rejoined the cast in January 2017.

“I’m so sorry as a father of a household,” said Cha. “I will take some time to self-reflect.”
