GS Retail hired the most people over last five years

GS Retail hired the largest number of employees over the past five years, followed by Hyundai Motor and Samsung C&T.

According to a survey conducted by job portal site Job Korea, GS Retail hired 7,561 employees from 2013 through 2017, showing a 172.9 percent growth. The company had 11,934 employees as of 2017 compared to 4,373 in 2013.

The survey was conducted based on official data released by the Financial Supervisory Service. Job Korea picked 74 out of 100 conglomerates - based on market value - that released business reports from 2013 to 2017.

Hyundai Motor came in second with an increase of 5,491 employees, followed by Samsung C&T with 4,360 workers. LG Chem was fourth and Samsung Electronics rounded out the top five.

The number of jobs generated by the conglomerates over the five-year period totals 17,000.

The company with the most employees was Samsung Electronics with 99,784 workers as of December 2017. Next was Hyundai Motor with 68,590 employees and LG Electronics with 37,653.

The ratio of female employees remained low, although their increase rate was higher than that of male workers. The number of female workers showed a 4.8 percent growth compared to 1.6 percent of male workers.

But the total number of female employees stood at 184,359 as of 2017, considerably less than the 573,267 male workers.
