High school student Lee Young-ji had the two biggest obstacles to overcome when she walked onto the set to compete for cable channel Mnet’s junior hip-hop audition program, “High School Rapper 3” - being both young and female. Many were doubtful whether she could even make it to the semifinals, never mind the finals. But not only did she get there, she won it all. On April 12, Lee became not only the show’s first female winner, but also the first female winner of any hip-hop audition program in Korea featuring both male and female contestants.

Lee’s victory came as more than just a surprise. All the odds were against a rookie freshman rapper who had only been rapping for six months when the show first began shooting. Nevertheless, Lee maintained her poise while wearing her brown school uniform with her tie pushed up to the neck, and took on the male competitors, many of whom had dropped out of high school.

When the contestants sat down during the first episode of the show on Feb. 22, each giving their own definition of hip-hop, Lee was told off by her fellow contestants, who told her, “Hip-hop comes when you lose the tie” and “You’re not hip-hop.” Even then, Lee was not afraid to speak up. “Where did you guys learn hip-hop? I ought to go and learn again,” she fought back.

“I’m actually not that hung up on the title as ‘the first female winner,’” Lee said in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, on April 19 in central Seoul.

“It’s true that female rappers have failed to receive as much attention until now. If you’re good, the spotlight shines down on you. But when you get the spotlight, you get boos, too. They boo at one of my traits, that I’m biologically female, but I can’t do anything about that.”

Booed or not, Lee beat all of the freshman competitors and made it to the final round with the help of her mentors, The Quiett and Code Kunst. And with “Go High,” her final song featuring Woo Won-jae and Changmo, she indeed went high, keeping her eyes focused on the prize money of 10 million won ($8,630). According to Lee, the idea that she could actually win came to mind after the semifinals. “I thought that the only way I could pay back to the mentors was to win, because they helped me with so much,” said Lee.

On the show, Code Kunst attributed Lee’s success to her diligence, but Lee thinks otherwise. “I’m actually not a very diligent person. But I tried really hard, because I didn’t want to become a pest to the mentors. My urge to do them no harm made me try even harder,” she said.

Diligence may not be her strength, but she was fearless on stage. Her outgoing personality led her to take on M.C. positions at school starting in elementary school and even taking on the job of student president.

“I always liked being on stage. I think it naturally came to me, not from wanting to do music but from wanting to be on stage, having fun. And hip-hop has a very free and casual mood. I did all kinds of things, like dancing, which eventually got me to writing my own raps,” Lee said.

Does this mean that she wasn’t afraid while filming the show? Quite the contrary. Although she enjoyed every moment of it and told herself that she had nothing to lose, she still had to pull herself together before she took the stage.

“I had fun with every single performance,” she said. “I was stressed out while I was preparing for it, but I always wanted to show a new side of myself when I was up there. But because there were times when I almost forgot the lyrics when I made eye contact with people, I intentionally looked away from people’s eyes. And sometimes just not focus on anything.”

When asked which the rapper she would like to one day have the opportunity to collaborate with, she chose Jay Park. “He has such a nice voice, and he has the power of being able to pull off every single song in his style, making it his own and drawing everyone in,” she explained.

“[After winning] the 10 million won, I bought pizza for all of my friends,” she said. “Now I’m going to buy new music gear, like speakers and microphones. I know that I still have a long way to go, but I want to build a steady career while working on a lot of new things [as a rapper]. And one day, I might get to work with Jay Park.”
