This is today's anchor briefing.

“No kissing, hugging or tapping. No joking, playing or peek-a-booing either.”
- From the film Loro (2018)

Advisors recite precautions to the prime minister one by one. They are things he must never do during an international summit… However, after hearing absurd warnings like ‘no peek-a-booing,’ the prime minister remained nonchalant.

“Voters like how I do things.”

This scene is from a film about the Italian politician Silvio Berlusconi called “Loro.” In reality, the man was famous for his blunt remarks and eccentric behavior.

“Nice tan”
- To former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009

“I won with my playboy skills”
- To former President of Finland Tarja Halonen in 2005

He told another country’s head of state that he had a “nice tan” and also created diplomatic problems because of his insulting words to a female president… His reaction to the incidents was always the same.

*diplomatic: 외교의

It was a joke. Why so serious…

A man arrested a few days ago for saying loathsome things also said that the “video was filmed to have a good laugh.” His lawyer defended his client by saying, “Is talking to oneself a threat?”

*have a good laugh: 대소하다

“I know your license plate number…”
“[I will become] a suicide commando…”
- YouTuber Kim Sang-jin

As if the world is being split into two… Comments that mock and look down on others are growing in number and their malicious intent is like venom. The degrading words targeting the May 18 Gwangju Uprising were said to be a common joke from an extreme rightist website… If so, according to their logic, the pizza eaten in front of the families of those who died during the Sewol ferry tragedy by people who oppose the family’s protest could be seen as a way to get a few laughs.

“I used the word without knowing of its exact meaning and specific origin.”
- Na Kyung-won, floor leader of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party

A person, who borrowed a word that continues to be in the spotlight, is explaining herself by claiming that she didn’t know its exact meaning. However… “It was a joke…” or “I didn’t know what the word meant when I used it, this is going too far…” is an insufficient reason for us to give it a pass as the venomous meaning permeates deep and spreads wide…

“No kissing, hugging or tapping. No joking, playing or peek-a-booing either.”
- From the film Loro (2018)

Come to think of it, compared to the biting remarks we hear almost daily, this sort of language is kind of cute…

*biting remark: 독언
