1919년 10월 27일. 서울 단성사. 무대 천정에서는 스르륵 하얀 천이 내려와 말로만 듣던 활동사진이 그 위에 펼쳐졌습니다. 장충단과 남대문, 뚝섬과 같은 도시 풍경은 물론 달리는 전차와 자동차의 움직임. 당시 10만의 관객을 모았다고 기록되는 한국영화 제1호 '의리적 구토'의 한 장면입니다.
It was Oct. 27, 1919, at Danseongsa Theater in Jongno, central Seoul. From the ceiling of the stage came a white sheet, and on it, moving pictures unfolded, something that people had only heard of. City landscapes of places [in Seoul] like Jangchungdan Park and Namdaemun in Jung District, and Ttukseom Island, north of the Han River, were shown [on the screen] as well as moving trains and cars. This was a scene of the first Korean movie “Uirijeok Gutu [Loyal Revenge],” which at the time was recorded as having been seen by 100,000 people.

의붓어머니에게 구박을 받고 자란 주인공이 훗날 복수한다는 내용… 구토란 복수를 뜻하는 일본식 한자 표현이라는데… 100년 전의 첫 영화는, 내용이야 그렇고 그랬지만 영화를 제작한 단성사 사장 박승필은 움직이는 세상의 경이로움을 하얀 천 위에 담아내고자 했습니다.
The movie is about a protagonist who was abused in his childhood by his stepmother, and gets revenge later in his life… gutu is a Japanese-style traditional Chinese word that means revenge… The first movie made a century ago did not have an extraordinary plot, but Pak Sung-pil, the owner of Danseongsa Theater, who was also the producer of the movie, wanted to capture the wonder of the [constantly] moving world.

Bong’s cinematic success was possible thanks to the accumulated 100 years [of movies] since “Uirijeok Gutu.” And on the same day at the “Future Library,” a Norwegian public arts project that has stored unpublished manuscripts by selected writers for nearly a century in Oslo, Norway, South Korean novelist Han Kang imagined the world in 100 years, a place where neither she nor her child exist.

100년 뒤에 인쇄하여 출간할 작품을 깊이 봉인하는 행사. 작가는 미래의 세상에 대한 의구심을 굳이 감추려 하지 않았고 심지어는 종이책이 남아있을 것인가를 의심했지만… 그래도 그는 애써 희망을 찾으려 했습니다.
In the event where the Future Library stored literary works that would be printed and published in 100 years, Han did not try to hide her doubts about the future, and was even suspicious about whether there will be any printed books left… Even so, she tried to find hope.

두 사람이 그려낸… 그래서 훗날의 사람들이 기억해줄 오늘의 세상은 어떤 것일까… 상생과 공생이 아닌 '기생' 이 화두가 되어버린 세상.
