What do dramas “Love in the Moonlight,” “Moon Embracing the Sun” and “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” all have in common, besides being hugely successful and irresistibly romantic?

They all started out as web novels, serialized stories that any writer can upload online.

As the number of web novels that become popular dramas, movies or even theatrical productions continue to rise, more writers and readers are becoming interested in this thriving new medium.

“Web novels grew steadily since we launched our platform in 2011, but it was last year that their popularity exploded,” said a spokesperson for Naver, one of the largest web novel platforms in Korea alongside KakaoPage and Munpia. “Revenues this March rose 30.4 percent on year, while readership grew 60 percent.”

Similarly, Munpia was recording only 770 million won ($647,000) in sales when the site launched in 2013, but by 2015, it posted 10 billion won in revenue, and that figure is expected to reach 42 billion won by the end of this year. Readership has also surged from 300,000 in 2015 to 900,000 today.

What makes web novels so attractive?

One big appeal is the low cost. Web novels typically cost about 100 won per episode, while the price of a regular paperback book in Korea is usually between 15,000 won and 20,000 won. They’re also easier to read. Most web novels fall in the genres of martial arts, fantasy, romance or cover other light content, and they are short enough for readers to finish each episode in five minutes or less.

“I read web novels on my smartphone in transit,” said Shin Yang-seob, an avid web novel reader. “The biggest advantage is that the episodes aren’t long, so I can use my in-between time to finish them.”

Platform operators believe web novels are more relatable to readers.

“Traditionally, novels are filtered out by publishing companies and take a long time to get to the market, limiting their audience reach,” said Kim Hwan-chul, the CEO of Munpia. “But web novels have the advantage of satisfying readers’ needs as they rise.”

“As dramas, musicals and movies made from web novels become popular, we’re seeing greater participation from new, talented authors,” said Park Jae-yeon, who manages web novels at Naver. “As a result, we are seeing more works that reflect the attitudes and culture of the younger generation, which in turn attract more readers.”

This rising industry offers plenty of perks to authors, as well. The low barrier of entry, for example, draws authors from all backgrounds and financial situations. Unlike web comics, which require a handful of expensive gadgets like tablet PCs to draw high-quality graphics, anyone can write a web novel as long as they have something to type with.

A doctor by day, Lee Nak-joon is among Korea’s many web novelists.

“I’ve always wanted to write my own work, but I couldn’t even entertain the idea with the existing publishing market. I tried out web novels since the platform allows me to freely upload my writing every day,” he said. Lee is currently writing “Trauma Center” (translated) on Naver Series.

Yuji, a writer who uploads on KakaoPage, said “I feel that web novels don’t face as many limitations as regular novels. The genres are divided into specific categories, allowing readers to pick what they want and writers to spin their tales without hindrance.”

The biggest perk, perhaps, is that web novelists can expect to get a larger share of their sales than regular authors.

“With publishing companies, only 10 percent of earnings go back to the author, but with web novels, authors get to keep 60 to 70 percent,” said Kim. “There are between 20 to 30 authors who earn over 500 million won a year at Munpia, and 10 who earn over 1 billion won.”

Singshong, who is writing “Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint” (translated) on Munpia and Sankyung, author of “The Youngest Son of the Chaebol” (translated), are two authors said to be in the 1 billion won club.

Web novel platforms are optimistic that the industry will continue to thrive as smartphones transform the way people consume media.

“Like the rickshaw gave way to the taxi, the market itself is changing as the trend of consuming writing evolves,” said Kim.

Banking on continued growth, online platforms are investing big money into finding the next star web novelist. Naver recently launched “The World’s Greatest Webtoon & Web Novel Competition,” offering aspiring novelists and cartoonists the chance to serialize their creations on the online platform and win prizes worth a total of 1.5 billion won. Companies are also working to expand translation and distribution services to reach a more global audience.

The local book publishing industry, however, appears to be unfazed so far by the aggressive growth of web novels.

“Web novels are limited to a few genres,” said a spokesperson for Minumsa, a publishing company. “Their literary style is completely different from existing publications. It’s far-fetched to say that the web novel market will be able to replace the existing publishing industry.”
