J.D. Power crowns Genesis, Kia and Hyundai

Hyundai Motor Group’s brands topped the new car quality survey list by U.S.-based market researcher J.D. Power, with Genesis coming in at first for the second year in a row.

J.D. Power said Wednesday that Hyundai Motor Group’s three brands - Genesis, Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor - took the three top spots in its Initial Quality Study this year.

The survey polls the number of problems users experience per 100 vehicles during the first three months of ownership.

Genesis took the top spot in initial quality with just 63 problems reported per 100 vehicles, with Kia in second with 70 problems and Hyundai Motor at 71 problems.

Excluding premium brands like Genesis, Kia Motors has ranked first for five years in a row, according to Hyundai Motor.

The industry average was 93 problems. The study included polled results from vehicle owners from 32 brands.

Hyundai Motor Group also received the most model-level awards, at six, including for vehicles such as the Genesis G70 in the compact premium car segment, Hyundai Santa Fe in the midsize SUV lineup and Kia Forte for the compact car segment.

J.D. Power added that 16 of 18 models from the Korean auto group ranked in the top three in their respective segments, explaining that the models were well received in terms of their infotainment systems and electronic components.

According to the study results, U.S. brands such as Ford and Lincoln followed the three Korean brands, trailed by Japanese automakers like Nissan, Lexus and Toyota.

This year’s study was based on responses from over 76,000 car buyers answering a total of 233 questions on issue with their new vehicles.
