This is today's anchor briefing.

Albert Camus (1913~1960)

He was an author that wrote about existence. However, we could have remembered him as a football player instead of a writer. He was said to have played for the varsity team of his school until he was 17, but gave up his dreams to become a football player because of poverty and tuberculosis.

Feeling regret, when he was asked, “What would you choose when given a second chance in life?” He answered.

“Football, without hesitation!”

His regret about not being able to play football lingered long - he even mentioned it after he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957. “What I know most surely in the long run about morality and obligations, I owe to football,” he said.

Before the sun came up on Sunday, and on the days that led up to that hour, those who watched the players who are not a hair older than 19 years old play in that dramatic game, saw football in a new light. Borrowing the words of a poet, football is a dazzling [sport] that is fierce even if [players] are only passing a ball back and forth without words.

“Can something be as fierce as passing a thing back and forth without words?”
- “Football” by poet Moon Chung-hee

“It is because of my teammates who helped me a lot…” said Lee Kang-in.

“’Shining Gwang-yeon‘ did a great job in the net,” said Choi Jun.

“If the other goalkeepers had played, they would have shined as well,“ said Lee Gwang-yeon.

On the contrary, the world right now is filled with blunt remarks and quarrels between people trying not to pass the ball to others who think differently… The young player’s words were a bit too textbook as they tried to praise their teammates instead of boasting about themselves… But, it makes people consider how the adult world should be.

Of course, life is somewhat different than a football game and cannot be compared to the sport exactly, which is played in just 90 minutes.

“A ball never arrives from the direction you expected it.”
- Albert Camus

Like Camus’ football dreams, good intentions do not always bring good results. What we should at least learn from football is something like this… Trying one’s best while on the field, even if someone breaks the rules and cheats… Everyone in the stadium is watching their every move, so their cheating will not be tolerated. Was it because of this that Camus could not let go of [the sport] until the end?

*intention: 의사, 의도

“Football, without hesitation!”
