Cultural exports rise in 2017

The growing popularity of Korean pop culture in the international market has led to rapid growth in the export of various Korean cultural products, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated in its “Content Industry Statistics 2018,” released on Thursday.

The statistics report issued by the culture ministry, showed that content exports amounted to $8.8 billion in 2017, a 46.7 percent rise year on year.

According to the report, the 46.7 percent increase came much higher than the average export increases across all industries, which was 15.8 percent.

Games showed the highest percent of rise in 2017, flying up by 80.7 percent compared to the previous year. Games also recorded the highest profit from exports, recording a whopping $5.9 billion, followed by characters ($664 million) and “knowledge information,” which covers technology products such as e-learning services and virtual reality, with $616 million.

“Content Industry Statistics” is a report made on the content market. This year’s tally covered nine sections: publication, comics, music, games, animation, advertisement, character, knowledge information and contents solution.
