Looking to the past to make brand new music: Musicians are reviving hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s and creating their own sound

Many singers have recently released remakes of songs that were popular in the 1980s to early 2000s. Reviving “oldies but goodies” has become a growing trend in the local music industry. Many artists today are on a tireless search for classic hits that were ahead of their times and are relevant enough to be brought back to the spotlight and transformed into trendy remakes.

Digging Club Seoul, a project run by Naver Cultural Foundation and music producing company Space Oddity, was created to dig up forgotten classics full-time.

Since last year, Digging Club began working with artists and bands to produce remakes of older hits. R&B singer George’s take on Kim Hyun-chul’s 1989 classic “After A Long Time” and Baek Ye-rin’s version of “Suddenly” by Jang Pil-soon, also released in 1989, quickly became popular and their videos attracted hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

Digging Club isn’t the only entity that’s found a market for revamped classics. Clothing brand Beanpole recently launched a campaign with singer Yoon Jong-shin to invite popular artists like Urban Zakapa, Jang Beom-june and Taeyeon from Girl’s Generation to reinterpret old songs with a fresh new twist. Jang’s edition of Light & Salt’s “After You Leave” (1989) drew a staggering two million views on YouTube.

What’s shifting people’s attention back to these decades-old tracks? Music critic Kim Jak-ga believes it’s nostalgia for when Korea was experiencing rapid cultural growth.

“The years following the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul is when youth culture really began expanding,” he said. “The economy was booming and Korea was taking in popular culture from various parts of the world. People are longing for those times.”

“I think people in their twenties have a yearning for a plentiful era they haven’t experienced,” added Space Oddity CEO Kim Hong-ki, referring to how hopeful and optimistic the late ‘80s were as the Korean economy was growing in two-digit figures. Music by artists like Kim Hyun-chul and Light & Salt are now known as “city pop,” a term coined in Japan that includes music styles like soft rock and R&B that entered Asia during the economic boom of the late 20th century.

A growing interest in alternative culture has also fueled the rise of remakes.

“I’ve seen people transfer remakes onto cassette tapes themselves and listen to them on a Walkman,” Kim continued. “[The trend] fits the hipster attitude of finding songs that only you know instead of listening to songs that everyone knows from the top music charts.”

Back in the spotlight, veteran singer Kim Hyun-chul released a new EP last month, his first in 13 years. It was 25-year-old George’s remake that inspired him to return.

“I wanted to make music again when I performed together with George on stage,” Kim said. The two sung “After A Long Time” at a concert hosted by Naver Cultural Foundation held in December. “I bought the instruments I had sold, and even quit my job as a radio DJ and focused on making music.”

For Kim’s EP “Fe’s 10th - Preview,” the two even worked together on a pop dance track.

Also notable is a movement to remake R&B versions of old tunes. Producer Jinbo has been adding soulful grooves to hits young and old through his project KRNB since 2012. Twice’s “TT” (2016), Yoon Soo-il’s “Apartment” (1982) and Yoon Sang’s “Running” (2000) are just a few of the many tracks he’s transformed into his own groovy style. “Running” had been remade several times by artists including S.E.S., SG Wannabe and Rooftop Moonlight.

“Just like academic papers with more citations receive more recognition, songs that are remade in various ways have that much more value,” said Jinbo. “If remakes were generally limited to overseas hits from the U.S. or Japan before, now Korean pop music has matured enough to be repackaged. K-pop fans here and abroad will be able to enjoy more genres like Korean R&B as they receive recommendations on YouTube.”

Twenty-seven-year-old Heize began uploading covers of songs that she used to listen to when she was younger on her YouTube channel recently. Seohyun, also from Girl’s Generation, recently covered Cho Yong-pil’s “My Friend” (1983) through a project orchestrated by ENE media and Cookie.

“We are planning to introduce Cho’s hidden masterpieces one by one,” said Cookie CEO Hwang Hee. “We will expand our project to include singer Lee Mi-ja and more genres.”

“If TV shows like ‘Immortal Song’ served as a bridge to connect old hits to a younger audience, R&B and city pop are now rising as a stylish form of music,” said music critic Seojeong Min-gap.

“I think it’s meaningful that songs by individual artists are being spotlighted together as part of the same genre… if musicians experiment with songs that weren’t hits as well, that will be a big asset to Korea’s pop culture history.”
