돈 헨리의 이른바 외계인론에 따르면 지구는 너무 위험하고. 낯설고 무엇보다도 오염돼 있기 때문이었습니다. 말 그대로 더러워서 안 온다고나 할까… 외계인이 그 넓은 우주를 놔두고 하필 지구로 내려온다니… 그는 어림없는 소리라고 일침을 놓았습니다.
According to Don Henley’s so-called ‘alien theory,’ Earth is too dangerous, unfamiliar and above all things, polluted. Literally, they are not coming because [Earth] is filthy… Why would aliens leave the vast universe and come to Earth… “Not in a million years,” he said.

그는 7년 전 제19대 총선 당시에 야권연대를 비판하는 여당 의원을 향해 그 유명한 외계인론을 폈습니다. 우리나라와 일본처럼 툭하면 갈등 관계에 빠지는 사이라도 외계인이 쳐들어온다면 힘을 모아서 지구를 지켜내야 한다는 이야기… 당시의 여당을 외계인에 비유해서 야권연대의 명분을 설파한 것은 노회찬 특유의 어법이기는 했지요.
He mentioned the famous ‘alien theory’ seven years ago to a member of the ruling party who criticized the solidarity of opposition parties during the 19th general election. It was a story about people uniting with each other and saving the Earth when aliens invade the planet, even if their relationships were brittle and could break at the slightest touch, like that of South Korea and Japan… The ruling party at the time was compared to an alien to justify the solidarity of opposition parties, which was a characteristic of how Roh Hoe-chan talked.
하긴 할리우드의 그 많은 영화 속에서도 역시 평소에는 앙숙이었다 하더라도 거대한 외계의 적이 나타나면 선택은 모두 같았으니까요… 노회찬의 비유에 따르자면 공교롭게도 이번에 침입해 온 외계인은 일본이 돼버렸죠. 우리는 그래서 힘을 합칠 수 있을까…
In the many Hollywood movies that feature aliens, people who would normally be enemies choose to work together when an alien enemy appears… To borrow Roh Hoe-chan’s words, coincidentally, the alien that has invaded us this time is Japan. So, will we be able to unite and work together?

정부가 대책도 없이 반일선동에 나서고 있다는 주장과 야권이 내부에서 오히려 태클만 걸고 있다는 비판이 맞서고 있는 지금… 미안하지만… 노회찬은 틀린 것 같습니다.
The situation today, where criticism that the Korean government is instigating anti-Japanese sentiments without any countermeasures, is opposed by the claim that the opposition is, on the contrary, attacking [South Korea] from the inside... I am sorry to say this… but I think that Roh Hoe-chan is wrong.

아, 아닙니다. 노회찬은 맞았을지도 모릅니다. 일본 왕복 티켓값이9만원, 혹은 그 이하. 여행객이 떨어지자 땡처리처럼 나온 경우에 따라서는 공항을 오가는 택시비보다도 적은 돈… 일본산 맥주값이 6캔에 5천원. 국내 대형 마트에서 재고를 정리한다면서 내놓은 가격, 생수값 보다도 싼값… 그래도 안 가고, 안 사 먹고 있는 민초들은 어찌보면 그의 말대로 하고 있는 셈이니까요.
Oh, never mind. Roh Hoe-chan could have been right. Round-trip plane tickets to Japan are 90,000 won ($76) or even less. Sometimes, when the number of tourists decreases, a bargain is struck and plane ticket prices can drop to less than a round-trip taxi fare to the airport… A six-pack of Japanese beer was on sale for 5,000 won. The bargain was offered by a big supermarket in the country, saying the sale was to clear out stock. It is cheaper than bottled water… Even so, the common people [of Korea] who do not go to [Japan] or buy [Japanese products] are in a way, following his words.
