“The Divine Fury” is expected to be Korea’s biggest action-fantasy movie, and actor Park Seo-jun, who plays the lead, has a good feeling about the cinematic universe that has been created.

“I watched it, and I think it’s been made well,” Park said in an interview with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, on Wednesday at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul.

Park is very popular these days, having pulled off TV hits such as “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” (2018) and big screen hits such as “Midnight Runners” (2017) and “Parasite” (2019). For “The Divine Fury,” Park teamed up once again with director Kim Ju-hwan, who took the helm for “Midnight Runners.” The film sold 5.7 million tickets in 2017.

“It’s not that I’m pressured about having another box office hit,” said Park. “But I was worried whether I could lead the scenes well. I believe that the atmosphere on a set has to be good if the result is going to come out well. I can’t help but focus on how the scene is, because I’m the one getting shot. I do feel the pressure of being the lead.”

He continued, “An actor is a part of a movie. I don’t think it’s just my worries. I do feel pressured as a person, but I don’t try to take everything on by myself. I’m not alone in making a movie. I just think about how I can best pull off my part.”

Park plays the role of Yong-hoo, a boxing champion who comes across Father Ahn (played by Ahn Sung-ki) and ends up joining him in his journey to eradicate the evil cult leader (Woo Do-hwan) from the face of the earth.

According to director Kim, “The Divine Fury” isn’t just a single-plot story, but hopefully the beginning of a massive cinematic universe that will continue on into the future, as with Marvel’s cinematic franchises.

“‘The Divine Fury’ does revolve around Yong-hoo, but there are other people around him, too. I didn’t really think much about it while I was shooting the film, because I naturally have to communicate with everyone on the scene while shooting. I don’t think I gave it much thought. But because the emotional changes of Yong-hoo are very important in this movie, I did think a lot about my acting and how I was going to keep myself paced,” Park said.

One of most important things in playing Yong-hoo was getting in shape, said the actor. As the character was a boxing champion, he had to get himself fit enough to make it convincing for the audience.

“I had about a month to get myself ready before the shooting began,” he said. “I lost so much weight for my previous drama, so I was skeptical about whether I could make it happen. But I worked out for eight hours a day for four months for the drama ‘Fight For My Way’ (2017), and my body remembered that. If you build your muscles once, then they come back about four weeks later if you exercise.”

One element fans might watch out for is the look of the priest’s robes, which play a big role in the film.

“I think like wearing school uniforms, priest’s robes have become a thing,” said Park. “I haven’t given it deep thought. But I think it’s a symbol of Yong-hoo and his determination to eradicate evil.”

Performing with veteran actor Ahn also gave him the chance to learn, Park said.

“He was truly like a father,” he said. “I felt like that during the scenes, but also in real life. He is so gentle. I had to work out in between scenes, because I had the role of a professional athlete. There’s usually no-one working out in hotel gyms, but I saw a middle-aged man running on the treadmill. It was Ahn Sung-ki. I was shocked to think that he was working so hard. I thought, ‘Will I be able to work as hard as he does when I’m his age?’”

Park added, “I’ve never seen him get his lines wrong. He prepares so much. It kept me on my toes, as his junior actor.”

“The Divine Fury” is known to have been appreciated by Francis Lawrence, the director of American hits “Constantine” (2005) and “The Hunger Games” movies. Director Kim revealed during an earlier press conference that Lauren had compared Park to “Asia’s Ryan Gosling.”

“[Meeting with director Lauren], I could see how the foreigners were going to view this movie,” Park said. “I really liked ‘Constantine,’ so I was very motivated by what he said. I think it will be a good watch for the foreigners, too.”

Asked whether he would like one day to work in Hollywood, Park answered, “I don’t want to get my hopes high, but I think there could be more chances than before. I would always like to travel abroad, and I think that there are more opportunities. Only those prepared will make it, so I’m looking to prepare myself such as by learning English.”

“I don’t think you can know whether a film is going to be successful or not before you open it. So all I can do is my best, but sometimes that does leave some regrets behind. I think it will help me grow in the future when I’m given feedback. I hope that this movie is a surprise box office hit once again,” Park said.

“The Divine Fury” hits local theatres on Wednesday, rated 15 and over.
