Samsung Heavy Industries battery receives an approval

Samsung Heavy Industries said Monday that its marine lithium-ion battery system has obtained “type” approval from DNV-GL, a Hovik, Norway-based international accredited registrar and classification society.

The approval confirms that Samsung Heavy’s battery for ships meets specified performance standards. Samsung Heavy said that its battery system successfully passed 31 “rigorous” tests on safety and performance.

The Korean shipbuilder co-developed the battery system with Samsung SDI as an eco-friendly solution that reduces fuel consumption by optimally controlling on-board generators and the power load. It is less polluting and helps ships reduce operating costs, Samsung Heavy added.
