He, whose name was [pronounced incorrectly] as ‘Yusevio’ [by Koreans], came to Korea with a prestigious Portuguese football club, the Sport Lisboa e Benfica, and showed off his cannon shot, which was his specialty move. Indeed, he was true to his nickname, the ‘Black Panther.’ In the two friendly matches with Korea’s national football team, Eusébio played passionately and stunned the crowd.

특히 더구나 비까지 내리던 경기 첫날의 그의 첫 득점은 아마도… 우리나라 축구사에도 기록될 만한 것이었을 겁니다. 경기 시작 1분여 만에 하프라인 바로 너머에서 프리킥을 얻은 에우제비우는 40m 가까운 골문까지 그야말로 대포알 같은 슛을 날려서 성공시켰지요. 예상도 못 했고, 보고 나서도 믿기지 않는 골에 관중들은 물론 텔레비전 중계를 지켜보던 시청자들도 경악했습니다.
Despite the pouring rain during the first day of the games, the first goal that he scored… was something worthy of being recorded in our own football history. A minute after the game started, Eusébio, who was awarded a free kick just beyond the half line, kicked a cannon-like ball that traveled 40 meters [131 feet] into the goal post. No one expected this goal and the people who saw it didn’t believe what they saw. Even those who were watching the game on TV were astonished [by the goal].

Until then, in some ways, football and its fans in Korea were babes in the woods, but this shot opened their eyes to football… Eusébio showed people how meaningful a team’s friendly visit and that team’s star player’s goals could be.

그날부터 동네 아이들은 볼을 차며 모두가 중거리 슛을 끝없이 연습했음은 물론입니다. 아마도 그 이후에 10년이나 혹은 20년 후쯤 나온 우리의 축구 영웅들 중에는 바로 그날 에우제비우가 보여줬던 그 슛 하나에 지대한 영향을 받은 선수들도 있었을 것입니다.
From that day on, neighborhood kids would kick footballs and practice shooting mid-range shots. Of our own football heroes that became famous 10 or 20 years later, there are probably some who were influenced by Eusébio’s shot that day.
그 인상적인 골이 터진 후 49년 만에 공교롭게도 같은 나라 출신의 축구선수가 자신을 보기 위해 며칠 밤을 설레며 기다렸던 한국의 관중들을 만났습니다. 그 중에는 병상에 있다 온 어린이도 있었다고 하지요…
Forty-nine years after that impressive goal was scored, coincidentally, a football player of the same nationality [as Eusébio] met his Korean fans who had waited for several nights just to see him. It was reported that there were even sick children among the fans…
그러나 그는 뛰지 않았고… 그 많은 관중들과 함께 경기를 '구경'하고 갔습니다. 뛰지 않은 것에 대한 변명이 무엇인지도 잘 모르겠고, 축구선수 하나에 의해 무시당했다는 말도 별로 입에 올리고 싶지는 않고… 다만…경기 내내 자신을 보러 온 그 수많은 관중들, 그 중에서도 아이들을 바라보면서… 그도 사람이니 마음이 편하지는 않았을 터인데…
However, the football player did not participate in the game… and instead ‘watched’ the game with the large crowd. I do not understand what his excuse was for not playing the game and I don’t really want to talk about having been disregarded by one football player… However… He would have seen the thousands of people who came to see him throughout the game, and of those people, he surely saw the children… He, just an ordinary person, must not have been comfortable…

잠시 그러니까 45분 동안 몸은 편했을지 모르나 그보다 훨씬 긴 시간 동안 마음은 불편할 것이라는 것을 깨닫지 못했으니… 그도 그저 공 잘 차는 축구선수일 뿐… 축구 영웅은 아니라는 것…
His body may have been uncomfortable for a moment, 45 minutes to be exact, but he did not realize that his heart would be uncomfortable for a much longer period of time… He, too, is just another football player who is good at the game, but he is not a football hero…
49년 전 그의 선배인 축구 영웅 에우제비우가 보여준 40m 대포알 슛의 추억이 어느 날 갑자기 축구하기가 싫었던 후배에 의해서 가려지지는 않기를 바라는…
I wish that the 40-meter cannon shot that his senior football hero Eusébio showed us 49 years ago was not overshadowed by a young football player that didn’t want to play football on a random day.
