BTS makes music history in Japan
BTS’s 10th Japanese single “Lights/Boy With Luv” went gold in the country, having sold 1 million copies in the month since it was released, a feat achieved by no other Korean act.
While their achievement is historic, the group is no stranger to success in Japan. BTS’s seventh single “Blood Sweat Tears” (2017) went platinum and their eighth single “MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow” (2017), third full-length album “Face Yourself” (2018) and ninth single “Fake Love/Airplane pt.2” (2018) each went double platinum.
The Recording Industry Association of Japan categorizes album honors by the number of its monthly album sales, starting with gold (100,000 copies), followed by platinum (250,000 copies), double platinum (500,000 copies), triple platinum (750,000 copies) and a million for over a million copies.
The septet’s 2015 music video for “Dope” surpassed 500 million views on Friday morning, bringing the total number of BTS music videos with over 500 million views to six.
BTS became the act with the most music videos seen over 500 million times on YouTube when the video for “Idol” (2018) reached the threshold on July 11. The other videos are “DNA” (2017) “Fire” (2016) “Fake Love” (2018) and “MIC Drop” (2017).
BTS has also continued to stay strong on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart for the 16th consecutive week with their latest EP “Map of the Soul: Persona,” which came out in April.
