DuPont completes polyimide factory

DuPont Electronics & Imaging completed a plant for the making of liquid polyimide, a core material for flexible displays, at Cheonan, South Chungcheong, the company said Wednesday.

Unlike hard displays that employ glass, flexible displays are covered with polyimide in the form of a thin, transparent film or a liquid. The new factory produces liquid polyimide.

The material can not only be used in the making of rollable displays but also on smartphone screens that fold or come with soft, rounded corners.

The company explained the expansion to its existing Cheonan plant comes in response to fast-growing customer needs in the flexible display market. It is the latest addition to the company’s ongoing localization efforts spanning production and research facilities throughout Korea.

DuPont Electronics & Imaging is the display and semiconductor materials unit of Midland, Mich.-based DuPont.

“The Cheonan plant is our production hub in East Asia,” said Kang Sang-ho, display technologies global business director at DuPont.
