A Korean independence militia led by Hong Beom-do won one of its earliest victories over Japanese forces on June 7, 1920 in Manchuria. Today, that battle, an important turning point for the Korean forces fighting against Japanese colonial rule (1910-45), is known as the Battle of Fengwudong, or Bongodong in Korean.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the provisional government of South Korea this year and the 100th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Fengwudong next year, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is telling the story of Hong through a musical production titled “Independence Army in front of the Theater.”

The Sejong Center for the Performing Arts has seven different performing groups of its own, including a dance theater group and an opera company. “Independence Army in front of the Theater” marks the first attempt in the center’s 41-year history that all seven groups will appear in the same performance.

With an ensemble of about 300 performers, it is a large-scale show, but the story is more than just the heroic saga of a great military leader.

Hong Beom-do

Scriptwriter Go Yeon-ok wanted to shed light on Hong’s later years, when he was deported to Kazakhstan and worked as a guard at the Koryo Theater, a theater for displaced Koreans.

In the musical, which also involves more theatrical sections similar to a traditional play, an aged Hong with gray hair is shown looking back on his life.

The show is based on a play titled “Flying Hong Beom-do,” which was actually staged at the Koryo Theater while Hong was alive.

When Hong saw the play about himself, he reportedly said two things: “This is too flattering” and “I feel ashamed.”

Kim Kwang-bo, the general director at the Seoul Metropolitan Theatre, takes the helm of the production. The theatre is one of the seven artistic projects under the Sejong Center.

Taking control of all seven groups was, Kim admitted, a difficult task.

“We have between 70 and 80 actors. It requires a lot of energy to step into that crowd,” Kim told the JoongAng Sunday during a recent interview.

“In the beginning, the performers didn’t really get why we were doing this.”

Once the performers realized how meaningful the project could be, they quickly found their motivation, Kim said.

“When we did a showcase under the blazing sun in July, it felt like we were part of a festival. Everyone clapped and applauded whenever each group finished their part.”

But the question still remains: Why would the Sejong Center invest so much into such a large-scale production telling the story of just one man, especially with a focus on the years after his famous heroic deeds?

“Hong had been fighting with himself for his entire life. He was a farm servant and then he stumbled upon the job of a hunter and later became an independence fighter. But he was deported to Kazakhstan in his later years. We wanted to put the spotlight not on the hero, but on the trust story of someone who had been working all of his life.”

In order to show Hong’s human side, a theater is used as a subject matter in the play.

“From the title of the ‘Independence Army in front of the Theater,’ Hong sounds like an outsider because he is in front of it [not inside it],” Kim said. “Hong once said he was an outsider for his whole life and did not belong to the mainstream. Why did the deported Koreans stage the play about Hong in such a rough situation? We’re doing this show to find out.”

Go’s script is very realistic, shying away from an overly patriotic portrayal of a perfectly righteous independence army. Go’s soldiers don’t always treat women well and are willing to receive bribes for important information.

Along with the realistic portrayal of the independence army, Kim’s direction adds much-needed depth to the production.

Kim always reflects the time he lives in through his work, whether it is a Shakespearean play or a piece written by a modern Korean writer.

Many of his previous projects have addressed timely social issues.

“I keep asking myself questions and thinking about the purpose of theatrical plays,” Kim said. “Even old classics have hidden meanings and I try to catch that from the point of view of a person who lives today. That way, the outcome contains some social elements.

“In this musical, we have this Koryo Theater, which is on the verge of being shut down, and the theater reminds me of the country that is under a lot of economic pressure [from Japan].”

Kim is well known for his minimalistic staging, but that wasn’t an option this time as he has to fill a huge 1,785-square-meter (19,213-square-feet) stage.

“This time the stage will be very flamboyant,” Kim said. “There will be a lot of LED on the floor and in the air. The choir will stand between the Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Orchestra and the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. When the curtain is opened, the audience will surely be overwhelmed.”

Another skill that Kim brings to the production is his ability to keep the audience interested.

This isn’t the first time the director has tried his hand at a serious story, but in every previous attempt, he hasn’t sacrificed the sheer fun of theatre in order to talk about heavy issues.

Thanks to that approach, the Seoul Metropolitan Theatre has also gone from strength to strength since Kim took the helm in 2015. Since he took office, the theater has been staging numerous works which retain both artistic value and mass appeal.

“When I came here, I could feel that people were really eager to see changes from the theatre,” said Kim. “I also got a lot of questions on how I’m going to add changes to the theatre. I just told them I would stay true to my position and keep producing theatrical performances.

“I believe we make theatrical performances in order to find the meaning of our lives. But today we are quite far from it. Daehangno is not what it used to be.”

Daehangno, located in Hyehwa-dong, Jongno District, central Seoul, is one of the city’s artistic districts where many small-scale theaters are clustered.

“I went there recently and was surprised to see that almost all theatres were playing profitable plays,” Kim said. “By looking at it, I thought to myself ‘Can classical theatrical performances survive here?’”

Apart from being involved in productions as the leader of the Seoul Metropolitan Theatre, Kim is also involved in discovering and nurturing the next generation in the field through a project called Creation Platform. He takes pride in the project and dedicates a lot of time to it.

“There are many other similar programs around organized by other public and private sectors, but a lot of people say ours is the best,” Kim said. “Maybe because we pick only two students every year and Go and I train them intensively, which is very effective.

“Next year, I will produce a production written by one of the students. I started this project, so I have to wrap it up.”

“Independence Army in front of the Theater” is being performed today and Sept. 21 at the grand theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts.
