Volkswagen resumes imports of new Arteon

Volkswagen Korea is resuming imports of its Arteon sedan with improved safety features after suspending shipments on Sept. 18 for internal approval processes.

The latest move comes after the automaker made its internal approval processes stricter in line with local regulations following the 2016 diesel emissions cheating scandal, which proved very expensive for the German group.

The Korean unit of the automaker group announced in a statement Monday that it will release the new Arteon equipped with enhanced safety features and improved warranty programs in Korea today.

The 2019 Arteon midsize sedan was originally launched here this May, but Volkswagen Group suspended additional imports on Sept. 18 to review whether the model follows local regulations.

The German automaker revised its policy earlier this year to halt all production and sales if there is any need to review whether it is following regulations for respective markets. Volkswagen Korea said it has resumed imports of the Arteon only after making it clear that the model is clear of any regulatory violations.

The 2019 Arteon comes with a 360-degree aerial view system and easier access to the trunk. The sedan is also equipped with new 18-inch wheels for a premium design, Volkswagen said. On top of maintaining a five-year or 150,000-kilometer (93,200-mile) warranty, Volkswagen offers a protection program that provides up to 1.5 million won ($1,250) in repair fees for damages to the car exterior from accidents.

The automaker is also selling a program that offers up to 2 million won in repair fees for auto parts that often get damaged in minor accidents.

The new Arteon, which is the only Volkswagen model available in Korea at this moment, is priced between 52.2 million won and 57.1 million won depending on trims and options.
