The company invested 70 billion won ($63 million) in the facility, which is able to efficiently and accurately manufacture more than 30,000 products with the help of state-of-the-art automatic equipment, according to a Dongwon statement. The factory will be used for Dongwon’s business-to-business model.
“It has become possible to produce sauces that could replace thousands of mom’s recipes through the country’s greatest state-of-the-art smart factory,” said Dongwon Home Food CEO Shin Young-su at the ceremony. “We will become a company that can most accurately deliver the taste our consumers demand.”
Chungju City Mayor Cho Gil-hyeong and Rep. Lee Jong-bae of the Liberty Korea Party attended the opening celebration.
The three-story factory, with a floor area of 20,800 square meters (224,000 square feet), features a manufacturing execution system, which monitors and tracks the manufacturing process, and a human-to-machine interface, a software application that provides information to operators about the state of a manufacturing process.
Dongwon said it saw the potential in the industry following the rapid development of the home-meal replacement market and the growing trend to dine outdoors. The size of the restaurant industry in Korea almost doubled over the past decade, according to the food manufacturer.
Dongwon hopes to raise its sauce sales from the estimated 190 billion won this year to 300 billion won by 2023.
The domestic seasoned food business last year stood at 2.6 trillion won, according to a report from Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. It is the fifth-largest component in the food sector.
Dongwon said it plans to use 3,306 square meters to manufacture home-meal replacement products.
