BTS rocks Riyadh during historic performance: K-pop superstars are first foreign act to hold stadium concert in Saudi Arabia
Global K-pop phenomenon BTS performed at the King Fahd International Stadium last Friday, becoming the first non-Saudi artist to hold a solo concert there. They were greeted by over 30,000 fans. [BIG HIT ENTERTAINMENT]
Fortunately for the fans, the boy band was also full of energy after a two-month break from performing and promotions.
Group leader RM warmed up the crowd with a heartfelt opening statement.
“We know that you’re sending us a lot of love from far away. So we’re hosting a festival for the ARMY [fans] who’ve waited a long time for BTS.”
The boy group gave it all they got, and were joined by emotional fans as they performed 24 of their biggest hits including “Boy With Luv,” “Idol” and “Fake Love.”
Although the global superstars kicked off their Saudi concert with the same opening track as their show at Wembley in Britain in June, there were noticeable differences between the two shows.
About 70 percent of the women in the audience members were donned in Islamic head coverings like niqabs, hijabs or chadors over abayas, a black outer garment that comes down to the feet. The crowd was made up of thousands of fans who had made their way from across the country and overseas to catch the Saudi leg of BTS’s “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” world tour, the first-ever solo concert held by a non-Saudi artist at a stadium in the country.
The group made a few changes to their choreography, opting not to show their abs, for example, in respect of the Muslim culture. Public dancing was forbidden in Saudi Arabia until just two years ago.

The 32-year-old outdoor arena began accepting female visitors from September 2017, and has allowed them to view football matches since January 2018.
BTS made notable efforts to respect the culture and religion of their Saudi fans.
Concert organizers set up carpets to allow Muslim fans to fulfill their five daily prayer times. Rehearsals were paused at 5:31 p.m., the fourth prayer time of the day, and the concert was deliberately scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. so fans could finish their 7:01 p.m. prayer beforehand. Female staff members of the concert wore abayas.
Showing interest and communicating in Arabic also made a good impression.
“Arabic is one of the most difficult languages to learn, but we really appreciated how BTS prepared greetings in Arabic as a special present for ARMY,” said Alya Alrashidi, a university student and concert attendee. The members had said phrases like “I love you,” “best” and “thank you” in the language, even singing Sana Helwa Ya Gameel, or happy birthday, to member Jimin, who celebrated his birthday on Sunday.
“Everyone in my family, including my cousins, are BTS fans,” added Norah, Alrashidi’s sister. “I really want to attend their concert in Korea in the future.”
The members of BTS weren’t the only ones showing off their impressive language skills. Many fans at the concert spoke considerable Korean, including Bedour Ahmed.

“I became a BTS fan after being touched by the lyrics of ‘Spring Day.’ I was able to find my true self thanks to the song,” added Han, who operates Twitter account ArabRM. The account, which posts updates about RM in Arabic, is followed by over 50,000 fans.
The arrival of the superstars also coincided with some major changes in the Saudi government’s tourism regulations as well.
Prior to last month, it was difficult to get a tourist visa without an invitation from a local. But on Sept. 27, just in time for the big show, the government initiated a new visa system that made it easier for visitors from 49 countries - including Korea - to apply for a 90-day stay.
“I had to cancel my flight and accommodation at first because I was unable to receive my visa, but I rebooked everything last minute when I finally got my visa,” said Abha Nayak, a 30-year-old accountant from India. “Many Indian fans had their visas rejected. I hope that BTS will be able to perform in India.”
There were some minor hiccups along the journey to this historical concert. Limited public transportation was available around the stadium, and the traffic congestion was heavy.
To the relief of Saudi fans, the 2.5-hour concert finished with no major incident, and also helped to instill hope for further positive engagement between Saudi Arabia, Korea and the rest of the world.
“People were worried and hoping that this concert would run smoothly, and I’m glad everything went well,” said Maha Al Nasser, a 27-year-old banker. “I hope [the concert] can help reduce some of the prejudices against the Middle East.”
A boost to Korea’s image thanks to the popularity of BTS was also welcomed by the many Korean nationals living in the country.
“Thanks to BTS, the image of Korea, which was only known for Samsung phones and Hyundai cars, has improved among the young fans,” said 56-year-old Lim Tae-won, who has resided in Saudi Arabia for the past 24 years. He facilitated rides for fans going to the stadium in a limousine bus.
For BTS, it was the love from fans that ultimately made everything possible. “ARMY gave us wings to fly from Korea,” said Jungkook.
BTS will hold the final shows of their world tour at the Seoul Olympic Stadium in Jamsil, southern Seoul beginning on Oct. 26.

한국어 떼창, 기도실 마련··· 서로 위해준 BTS 사우디공연
“난 지금 세상의 문 앞에 있어/ 무대에 오를 때 들리는 환호성”
약 두 달간의 장기휴가를 마치고 무대에 오른 멤버들은 에너지가 넘쳤다. “여러분이 먼 곳에서 저희에게 주시는 사랑이 크다는 걸 알고 있다. 오늘은 오랫동안 BTS를 기다려온 아미들을 위한 축제”라는 RM의 인사말과 함께 진짜 축제가 시작됐다. ‘작은 것들을 위한 시’ ‘페이크 러브’ ‘아이돌’ 등 앨범별 타이틀곡은 물론 멤버별 솔로곡이 나와도 떼창이 이어졌다.
평소와 달리 복근 노출 등을 자제하고, ‘뱁새’ 등 일부 안무가 순화되긴 했지만, 함께 노래하고 춤추는 데는 전혀 지장이 없었다. 2년 전까지만 해도 공공장소에서 춤추는 것이 금기시됐다는 말이 믿기지 않을 정도였다. 멤버들은 “아홉브쿰”(사랑해요), “알 아브딸”(최고), “슈크란”(감사합니다) 등 아랍어로 팬들과 소통했다. 13일 생일을 맞은 지민을 위해 아랍어로 “싸나 헬와 야 자밀”(생일 축하합니다) 노래를 부르기도 했다.
2017년 9월 열린 건국기념일 축제에서 처음 여성 입장을 허용한 데 이어 지난해 1월부터 경기장 내 여성의 축구 관람이 가능해졌기 때문에 사우디 아미라 해도 이곳을 처음 찾는 경우가 대부분이었다. 대학생 알리야 알 라시디(23)는 “아랍어는 가장 배우기 힘든 언어 중 하나인데 첫 공연에서 아랍어 인사말과 이벤트를 준비해 사우디를 포함한 모든 아랍 아미들에게 특별한 선물이 됐다”고 말했다. 노라 알 라시디(25)는 “동생과 함께 첫 콘서트를 보게 돼 너무 기쁘다. 가족은 물론 사촌들까지 모두 BTS 팬”이라며 “언젠가 한국 공연에도 꼭 가보고 싶다”고 말했다.
이처럼 현지 팬들을 향한 세심한 배려는 곳곳에서 돋보였다. 하루 5번 메카를 향해 기도하는 이슬람 신도들을 위한 카펫이 깔려있었다. 네 번째 기도 시간인 5시 31분이 되자 음향 리허설도 중단됐고, 공연 시작도 기도 시간에 맞춰 진행됐다. 마지막 7시 1분 기도를 마치고 공연을 즐길 수 있도록 7시 30분부터 시작한 것이다. 여성 스태프 역시 아바야를 입고 현지 문화를 존중하는 모습을 보였다.
팬들의 한국어 실력도 상당했다. BTS 덕분에 한국어를 배웠다는 베두르 아흐메드(25)는 “한국 이름은 조아라이고, 한국 나이로 26살”이라고 또박또박 말하기도 했다. 5만여명이 팔로잉하는 ‘아랍RM’ 트위터 계정을 운영 중인 한(23)은 “‘봄날’ 노랫말에 감명받아 팬이 됐다”며 “덕분에 진정한 자신의 모습을 찾아가게 됐다”고 말했다. 한국 사람이라는 이유만으로 따뜻한 인사를 나누며 사진을 찍자고 제안하는 아랍 팬들과 만나며 이곳에 오기 전 가졌던 막연한 두려움은 조금씩 사라져갔다.
은행원인 마하 알 나세르(27)는 “이번 공연이 제대로 치러질까 다들 걱정이 많았는데 순조롭게 진행돼서 다행”이라며 “중동 지역에 대한 선입견이 조금이라도 사라지길 바란다”고 말했다. 공연장에서 만난 팬들은 하나같이 “아바야는 이제 강제 착용이 아니다. 오늘 여기 입고 온 것은 스스로 결정한 것”이라고 했다. 무함마드 빈 살만 왕세자의 주도하에 경제ㆍ사회 개혁 프로젝트 ‘비전 2030’이 추진되면서 여성의 권리가 날로 신장하고 있음을 느낄 수 있는 부분이었다.
이는 외국인 관광객 유치에도 큰 도움이 됐다. 나만 해도 어렵사리 사우디 공연 티켓팅에 성공하고도 걱정이 앞섰기 때문이다. 한국에서 바로 가는 직항 편도 없을뿐더러 현지에서 발급한 초청장이 없으면 비자조차 나오지 않는 곳이었다. 출장 시기와 맞아 떨어져 운 좋게 보게 된 웸블리 공연과는 차원이 달랐다. 지난 8월 서울에서 사흘간 ‘BTS 인사이트 포럼’을 개최한 기획자이자, 내년 1월 4~5일 영국에서 열리는 ‘BTS 콘퍼런스’ 기조연설자로서 꼭 보고 싶은 공연이었지만 넘어야 할 산이 적지 않았다.
BTS 공연 보름 앞두고 첫 관광비자 발급
다행히 사우디 정부는 지난달 27일부터 한국 등 49개국을 대상으로 관광비자 발급을 결정했다. BTS 공연을 보름 앞두고 외국인 관광객에게 문호를 활짝 개방한 것이다. 처음 시행되는 사우디 전자비자는 신청한 지 3분 만에 나왔고, 턱없이 부족한 현지 정보는 아미의 가장 큰 무기인 ‘연대’를 통해 해결했다. “여자 혼자서는 너무 위험하니 가지 말라”는 주위 사람들의 반대를 무릅쓰고 트위터에 고민을 공유한 결과 나와 비슷한 처지에 놓인 사람들을 만난 덕분이다.
각종 SNS를 통해 ‘현지 소식통’이 되어줄 사우디에서 근무하는 한국인 아미까지 12명이 모이자 그 다음부터는 일사천리로 진행됐다. 사우디에 24년째 거주 중인 무역업자 임태원(56)씨는 “공연장까지 가는 대중교통이 전혀 없어 불편할 것”이라며 30인승 리무진 버스를 동원해 팬들에게 제공했다. “10년 전만 해도 한국 하면 떠오르는 이미지는 삼성 핸드폰, 현대 자동차가 전부였는데 BTS 덕분에 젊은 층 사이에서 이미지가 한층 좋아졌다”는 이유에서다.
반면 인도에 사는 회계사 아브하 나약(30)은 “처음에 비자가 안 나와서 숙소와 항공편을 모두 취소했는데 막판에 발급돼서 모두 다시 예약했다”며 “인도 팬들 대부분이 비자 발급이 거절됐다. BTS가 인도에서도 꼭 공연했으면 좋겠다”며 안타까움을 표하기도 했다. “아미가 한국에서 사우디까지 날아올 수 있게 날개를 달아줬다”는 정국의 말처럼 곧 인도로 향할 날개도 준비되지 않을까. “우리를 보고 싶어하는 사람들이 있는 곳이라면 어디든 간다”는 것이 BTS의 지론이니 말이다.
2시간 40여분간 펼쳐진 24곡의 공연은 순식간에 끝났다. 사우디에서 펼쳐진 첫 대형 공연이기에 극심한 교통 혼잡이 빚어졌고, 숙소로 돌아오는 데도 비슷한 시간이 걸렸다. 하지만 짜증 내는 사람 하나 없이 다양한 언어의 대화가 오갔다. 우리가 하나로 ‘연결’돼 있음을 다시 한번 실감할 수 있는, 서로를 향한 사랑과 존중이 넘쳐나는 밤이었다. 오는 26일부터 사흘간 서울 잠실 올림픽 주경기장에서 펼쳐지는 이번 투어 마지막 공연에서는 또 어떤 이야기를 나누게 될까. ‘스피크 유어셀프’의 순간이 벌써부터 기대된다.
