Lee Ha-nee has a serious side: For ‘Black Money,’ the actor shows off her English skills while playing a top lawyer

테스트

Miss Korea-turned-actress Lee Ha-nee reached a career milestone earlier this year when “Extreme Job,” the action comedy she starred in, became the second most successful Korean film in box office history after “The Admiral” (2014).

In her latest film “Black Money,” which hits theaters next Wednesday, Lee shows off a more serious side of herself.

“Black Money” addresses one of the most controversial incidents in Korea’s financial history - it’s based on the mysteries surrounding American equity fund Lone Star’s acquisition of the Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) for around 1.7 trillion won ($1.46 billion) in 2003, when the actual worth of the bank was estimated to be exponentially larger than that. According to the film, KEB was worth around 70 trillion won at the time.

Lee takes on the role of a super elite lawyer named Nari, who serves as the legal representative for the beleaguered bank, alongside veteran actor Cho Jin-woong, who plays a prosecutor striving to find out the truth about the thorny transaction. “Black Money” is directed by none other than Chung Ji-young, who has a track record of dealing with weighty historical and political issues on the big screen, in films like “National Security (Namyeong-dong 1985)” (2012), about a tortured activist during the dictatorial Chun Doo-hwan regime and “White Badge” (1992), about Korean soldiers in the Vietnam War (1955-1975).

Before “Black Money” hits theaters, the JoongAng Ilbo caught up with Lee to discuss her latest film, working with Chung and her personal life. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

Q. Do you feel like you have a lot to live up to after the success of “Extreme Job?”

A.
This movie is valuable to me because the director, Cho Jin-woong and I worked on it together. My only hope for the movie was for it to be released. It would be a lie to say that I don’t care whether it becomes a box office hit, but I think having it screened in theaters already means that we have accomplished half of our goal.

“Black Money,” which hits theaters next Wednesday, is about the infamous sale of the Korea Exchange Bank to an American entity. [ACEMAKER MOVIE WORKS]

Why does this movie need to be released?

As a Korean citizen I felt wronged. I didn’t know that Lone Star had bought KEB at a giveaway price even though I wasn’t that young when it happened. I asked myself “why didn’t I know about this?” There weren’t many people around me who knew about it either. The public has the right to know.

Director Chung would say “I can’t sleep at night. If I don’t make this into a movie I won’t be able to sleep.” I think that pretty much explains everything.

How factual is this movie?

It’s a simple event. A bank worth 70 trillion won was sold to a foreign entity for 1.7 trillion won. An international court will make a decision next year. If a country fights against a business, they say that there is a high chance that the country will lose. If that’s the case, we’ll have to make a 5 trillion won payment using Korean tax money. It’s also true that the information was manipulated, leading the bank to be sold for dirt-cheap.

How was it working with legendary director Chung Ji-young?

I think I was scared during our first meeting. It seemed like some people had recommended me to him for the role of Nari although he wasn’t really keen about it.

I sat down thinking that I was face-to-face with a living legend, but he stared at me for 5 minutes without saying anything. He broke the silence laughing, telling me, “Okay, let’s go get a drink now.”

On the set the director was just like a young boy to the point that I wondered how a person could be so pure. He seemed so much like a friend that it was awkward to think of him as an elderly man in his 70s. I could easily communicate with him about how I felt on set and what I wanted to do.

You speak a lot of English in the film. Did you have to study for it?

[English] is used in the first scene in which Nari appears and it represents her character. Nari studied abroad for a long time and was working in the United States. I paid a lot of attention to [scenes using English] because I was supposed to be fluent.

I wasn’t that good in English before, but I learned a lot of financial terms for the film - there were many words that I used for the first time.

What do you usually do in your free time?

I keep active even when I’m resting. I try to [prioritize] meditating. When [the filming for] “Black Money” ended in August, I wanted to get some real rest so I went to Bali and did yoga for around a month. That gave me a lot of energy.

I also took classes to become a yoga instructor and became a level 1 teacher. I recently had a chance to teach, and [the students] made it comfortable for me, not treating me special because I was Lee Ha-nee, but just as someone who likes yoga.

You’ve played the gayageum (traditional Korean instrument) for a long time. When you were focused on music, would you have expected to become an actor?

I did Korean traditional music from a young age and was exposed to many different art forms, including acting. I’m really happy now, and I feel like I’ve found the right art form for me.

Nowadays when I play the gayageum my back aches. I hurt my spinal discs after I held three one-hour solo recitals a while back. The pain was so severe that I almost had to give up acting.

But I don’t want to let go of something that I did for my whole life. I still play the gayageum. Some fellow musicians and I are planning to release an album by the end of November.
