CJ ENM, Disney are neck and neck

Korea’s largest film distributor CJ ENM and Walt Disney Company Korea are neck to neck in box office shares this year.

The Korean Film Council reported that CJ ENM, which distributed 13 films this year, took the biggest market share at 24.5 percent.
But Walt Disney Company Korea, which also had 13 releases, is right behind CJ at 24.4 percent.

CJ ENM released three films that landed in the country’s top 10 biggest box office hits for 2019 — “Extreme Job,” “Parasite” and “Exit.”

Walt Disney was responsible for four out of the top 10 hits, including “Avengers: Endgame,” “Aladdin,” “Captain Marvel” and “Lion King.”

The two distributors are expected to continue battling for the title of 2019’s biggest distributor during the final two months of the year.

Walt Disney is releasing “Frozen 2,” the highly-anticipated sequel, on Nov. 21.

In December, CJ ENM will release the big-budget “Mount Paektu,” which is estimated to have cost 26 billion won ($22.2 million) to produce. The movie tells the story of the two Koreas trying to stop a volcanic eruption, and stars actors Lee Byung-hun and Ha Jung-woo.
